Updating kitchen / decorating ideas needed!
Comments (16)Thank you all for your feedback! I am going to try some ideas for the area to the right of the sink and see what works. With regard to the island, we are planning to add some trim detail and paint it. However, I'm not sure what color to paint it yet. Additionally, I was worried the kitchen might start to look chopped up if we paint the island a lighter color - considering we have two other large runs of cabinetry in the dark cherry/mahogany stain. (double oven wall / coffee bar area plus the wine/ China / hutch area). Any thoughts on painting the island a lighter color?...See MoreNeed kitchen update ideas --- Please help
Comments (12)The fridge is probably the same width as the range, and 6" deeper. How will that help with access to storage where the range is currently located? It will encroach on the sink area, and cabinets to the left of the sink, and make the uppers on the range wall inconvenient to access. Plus, the fridge doors will either open with an inconvenient swing--left-to-right, as pictured--or, if you change the door swing to right-to-left, so that the doors open against the wall, you might not be able to open the fridge door fully, to take the crispers out for cleaning. The door handle might also hit the wall when the door is opened. Consider the disadvantages before you have the super switch the appliances--they maybe why the previous owner switched them already....See MoreKitchen update ideas needed
Comments (22)Wow! Thanks for all the comments and ideas. To start with, for context, this is a small concrete block 1950s house in a great area. I love it, it's adorable-- but it's a challenge. We recently got the foundation repaired, cracks repaired in all the walls, and the plumbing replaced. Now I'll try to answer all the questions. First, the floors are stained red oak and we put them in when we did because it turned out to be a minimal cost when the rest of the house was getting the heavily worn 70 yr old floors sanded/repaired/refinished. Also, we wanted them to match the rest of the house. I can probably buy a can of the stain to have on hand. Behind the refrigerator and stove wall is concrete block, then a small garage that is used as a project room. The opening on that side goes down three steps into a laundry room/ pantry that also has the only entrance to the garage from the house. The currently blank wall is plaster and lathe, about 5 inches thick with a living room on the opposite side. That living room also has a small dining room that you can see through the arch window opening in the kitchen. A previous owner opened up between the living room and the "dining room" (originally a bedroom). But load bearing columns had to be left. I'm concerned that opening up that wall in the kitchen will create an open floor plan, which I'm not a fan of, and even more columns. Last, it don't think that we can possibly block off the doorway because it's the main access into the kitchen for groceries etc. It would also make the entrance to our home incredibly tight. People commonly step into the kitchen when coming in as group. This is all to say that we have had a tough time coming up with a way to move walls and doorways that didn't create as many problems as it solved, though we have had several architects and kitchen designers etc come out to the house over the years. I do like the idea of putting cabinets along the blank wall. We've had a cute kitchen cart over there for years....See MoreNeed ideas to update look
Comments (10)I would start with the entry area. Steps first: Face them towards the front not the driveway. Replace front door with one with windows for a more inviting look. Then a walk. That could run you $5 in materials. Remove the shutters, should not be on a double window. Have an arborist come look at the tree to make sure it is healthy. Call your state's extension service they will give you a list of arborists. Usually they evaluate for free. (Just did that here in Massachusetts). As more money becomes available look into the the new minis splits for AC so you can remove that eyesore from the front of your home. Lots of rebates through your energy company are available. Driveways are costly look into other options besides all that asphalt. You might even consider removing that add-on garage. Look into a shed instead for storage. Once all that is done it's time to choose paint colors. Then landscaping. It will be a great looking home once you fix things up a bit. Enjoy!!!...See Moreskatd
