Replace Soffits, Etc., But Leave Original Vinyl Siding?
Comments (3)First, make sure the house is really a tear-down. If you know a Realtor, contact them, if you haven't used online estimators like Zillow, do so, ask neighbors who have bought recently, etc. If you determine the house is worth nothing, then there's no point in spending anything beyond keeping it safe and comfortable until you decide to sell. In the usual sequence, siding comes after windows, doors, soffits and fascia. That said, it's certainly possible to repair and/or replace windows without replacing the siding, but it takes patience, creativity and experience....See MoreQuestion about replacing vinyl siding with clapboard
Comments (3)Agree with Kudzu, assume the worst and hope for the best once you remove the siding. We also have the original cedar under our vinyl (we think). To give you a head start, we got a single bid for the same thing. Plan to get a couple more. It would probably be a decent amount of work filling nail holes from vinyl, etc, and who knows what condition it is in. I assumed the worst and got a bid to replace with 3" Hardie lap on bottom 2/3 with metal corners and shingles on top. Was close to $20k (not including painting), and my home is 1400 sq ft in Seattle....See MoreReplacement wood windows vinyl or aluminum clad?
Comments (5)More suggesting it because there are options to have a wood interior with a non-wood exterior. Wood is great and a lovely material, but there are better options in many cases if you are not compelled to use wood via some sort of historical guideline....See MoreHelp me to decide where to put regular vinyl siding vs vinyl shingles.
Comments (3)Not a pro; just some thoughts. Use only the one kind of siding (such as the same horizontal siding) for the main level of the house, except ... IF you truly want a second kind of siding for contrast on that main level (would NOT use "shingles"), then you might consider a vertical (board & batten) version of the same kind of siding -- but ONLY in the front porch / front entry area for emphasis You don't want the house to appear thrown together with leftover siding when you ran out of other siding. If you truly like and want shingles siding, then consider putting shingles siding only on the upstairs left/right ends of the barn style roof -- but, personally, I'd prefer vertical board&baton siding on that as well....See MoreBeverlyFLADeziner
