my GE french style fridge door swings too far....

my house is new house and I moved in 8 months ago. (still have 1 y warranty)

the problem is my french style refrigerator left door is hitting next wall.

this model is Monogram ZWE23PSHSS. I bought this from our builder.

Saleswoman told me this fridge would be fitted with cabinets well. That's why I paid more this from the builder, not Best Buy! you know we can buy better and cheaper one at other store.

anyway when I moved in my house. I noticed there is something problem because there are gap around fridge. but I was not sensitive. After 5 months, I realized there are long scratches on the left door. left door is hitting the next wall edge everytime I open the door.

this wall layout is ridiculous. I was trying to find door stopper of this model. but GE said they don't have any accessories for this model because this one is french style refrigerator. I asked to builder to fix it or give good solution. they are trying to ignore and avoid responsibility now.

so I have to pull out the fridge from the back wall almost 12" and push right side (so it's not centered with upper cabinet).

it looks soooo wierd.

one of the customer service rep said when their contractor build this house, they didn't think about fridge dimension. he said "just in my opinion". and then he also didn't response of my text so far.

I bought this fridge before they started to build. it's really bullshit.

Do you guys have any solution about this? do I need to report contractor board? will they approve it?

You never noticed the door problem between the time they built the kitchen and after living there long enough to damage the door? I think you probably have missed the window for getting anybody to set things right for you. There should have been some kind of spacer between the side wall and the fridge. It's possible that the cabinet vendor could provide one, if you can get a smaller fridge to fit the space minus a couple of inches. That will fix the problem, but I don't know what chance you have of getting somebody else to pay for it.

Athome: that picture showing 2.5" is for a single door model. It states that 'other models may require more'. I'm hoping you realize that with a single door, the hinge will be on the side away from the wall, unless you provide the additional space to the wall side. The location of the hinge pivot point and the thickness of the door will determine how much if any space is needed to the side in order to open the drawers. I've looked at a lot of fridges (I have a wall to the left as well) and some only need 90* while most need more to get the drawers fully open or removed completely. Don't forget any clearance issues on the right side between the door and the countertop. Some people forget this and are dismayed when they punch a dent into the door from the corner of the countertop.

I would just like to comment even though this is an older thread. French door refrigerators with in-the-door ice dispensers are known to have problems. This is due to the ice maker being located in the refrigerator area rather than the freezer area. All brands have problems. We had to replace our Samsung french door refrigerator after two years because of recurrent problems with ice buildup around the ice maker making it unusable. Samsung repairmen came out several times, the last time even replacing the entire ice maker but to no avail. After much research I learned that these all have problems despite the brand and although not everyone who has a French door refrigerator with an in-the-door ice dispenser will have problems, these types of refrigerators have an inordinate amount of issues necessitating repair or replacement. We finally bought a French door refrigerator with the ice maker in the bottom and have no problems.

Good advice everyone! I will try a bunch out and see what they are like. If that big snack drawer that goes the whole width of the fridge is in there, then there could be a problem. But beyond that it shouldn't be too bad...we'll see. DH is already sick of hearing/talking about this, and he's not even done with the rest of the work yet! But it sounds like depending on the model and the measurements, a FD fridge COULD work, but only if we measure very carefully. Not being able to take the crisper drawers out w/out moving the fridge from the wall doesn't bother me too much. We keep the fridge pretty clean typically, so I only clean out the drawers once or twice a year (is that gross??). ;-) Elba--I have to take better pics. That one doesn't do the granite justice. The best way I can describe it is that it is actually a subdued Emerald Pearl. There are a lot of mica flecks but not as much as EP. It's really beautiful. So glad someone has the same kitchen configuration! Have you ever considered a FD for your space? What are you going to get with the reno?

raynag, Our Maytag has been a lemon. We've had it about 18 months and the repairman has been to our house about 9 times. Many different problems. It's working now, though barely, and have been waiting on a part for 3 weeks. Can't even get parts in. After many, many, many telephone calls with Maytag they extended our warranty another year. We are planning to get rid of it before this warranty ends because we wouldn't be able to afford the repairs.

That is a kitchen design error and has nothing to do with the appliance itself. You always need space or cabinet between a refrigerator and a wall. Like a broom pantry or 6” filler.

My regular sized refrigerator door will hit the wall even though there is a 24" cabinet between the two. Small kitchen problem, not an error, in this case. I placed the prettiest doorstop I could find in the least obtrusive spot (right next to the adjacent door molding) to prevent damage. It has worked for 5 years so far.

Perhaps you can find something to place on the wall also to cushion the impact of the door.
