how to fill space above couch

Please help me find the best way to use my husband’s beloved Jack Paluh patriotic hunting artwork. It needs to go above my couch in our two-story living room. It seems so “boring” by itself. What could I place around it ?
It’s 39x33 with a distressed silver wood-look frame. I’ve included some other pictures of the room for reference.

I'd look at why the painting has meaning to your husband and build a gallery wall around that. Is your husband a veteran? If so is there any memorabilia that he might want to display? If it's the patriotic theme you could find a flag or other items to display in that vein. Or you could riff off the hunting theme in the artwork if that resonates with your husband.

The painting is a bit small, but not a lot small. Two smaller items on one side, or four even smaller items with two on each side would make a nice grouping.

Great ideas on the grouping. Yes, my husband is an Army Vet. I just don’t want to relive my late ‘80’s decor of oak shelves and crafts. Would you suggest painting the frame?

Annie, Mtn, Holly, & jakefield - Thank you all for adding your opinions. I appreciate the feedback so much! It seems unanimous for going with the larger (27") prints & for keeping them close together (about 2"). It also helps to hear so many think they should come down a little bit closer to the top of the sofa. Most of you like the look with the trunks on the outside. I'll probably start out with the trunks on the outside and then see how it looks in relation to my sofa & the whole room. I'm aiming to purchase these at the end of December. Then, I can take pics & post a follow up.

Too many rugs don't you think? They can't be all over the place. Take awy that one from between your kitchen and living room. Get a reasonable sized tree to visually divide the two areas. Add a simple panel end long console table and place your two sheepskin stools below the console. Install a pair of frame art pieces on the wall. Space is a luxury. Every sq. ft. doesn't have to be filled with stuff.

I don’t understand that white shelf over the head board. It messed up your room so take it down and find some art or fabric you like and stretch it over a large frame for some fun in your room. Some fabric like this pillow would bring some joy. Try moving that bookcase over to beside bed to use as a bit of a night stand. Then move corner ladder piece to corner left of TV. Move dressing mirror to other side of room. Get a lumbar pillow with more color to go with art you create. Let the art cover any holes you have in walls. A small chair would be nice too. Put a ball lamp on bookshelf. I will post some pictures to give you some additional inspiration.

The basic layout Beverly posted is your best bet and you might be able to put a table behind sofa or a reading/feeding baby area you might need. TIP, get a good rug pad for your rug on your tile. It will eliminate telescoping of grout lines in rug and be more comfortable. I would also remove those drapes and unless you need privacy, which doesn’t look like it hence I wouldn’t add any drapes. Possibly solar shades if you need light control. A few strategically placed plants might be all you need.

I think the frame is fine.

I'm sure there's a way to display items without 80s-era oak shelved (there were a lot of those in my mom's house). I suggest you brainstorm with your husband, if he's game, about what items he might like to display, and then you can come back here for concrete suggestions. A shadow box is a nice way to display small 3D objects, for example, without an oak shelf in sight.
