Need to Finalize Plans/Help with Basement Layout w/fireplace & TV
Comments (1)In our family, the tv is the focus of our basement room because watching tv or playing video games is primarily what people do in our rec room. We put the fireplace in the corner and then have the tv centered on the wall (where you show the fireplace in your plan) with the furniture facing it....See MoreLiv rm makeover furn placement needs help
Comments (4)My first impression when looking at your pictures (and keeping a PB/transitional style in mind): Fireplace needs something much larger in scale on/over the mantle, think about 75% - 80% the width. What's directly across from it? Will the new TV be in the same space as the one you have now? Do you have any idea what you will be getting in terms of size, mounting/sitting, etc? That TV wall is a lot of wasted space. I'm not getting a great sense of the layout of the room from your pictures (I'm spatially challenged!) but I'd like to see a large sofa angled across the room so that it was parallel to the fireplace. Depending on the size/location of future tv, the seating would work around it, but it looks like that's the only wall to achor a tv. Or could you place it on the wall where the stairs up are? (Sorry, I told you I'm bad about mentally recreating stpatial relationships). Is privacy a concern where you live, or are you secluded? I don't LOVE leather couches, either. We have several pieces of leather seating on my husband's home theater area and I ended up being allergic to them, so my gusto is even less than it was. :) My ideal solution so far has been "leather look" microfiber. The bomber jacket kind. Anything my toddler, dog or husband get on it wipes right up with a damp cloth, or I can take the steam cleaner to it, or I can throw the cushion covers in the wash, or... as mom to just 1 toddler, I have to say that microfiber is the perfect fabric for households with kids, who aren't leather crazy. :) If a sectional would provide the seating you're after, consider a balanced sectional (both "arms" are equal length, rather than one longer than the other) set at an angle, so it's used as more of a V than an L. The valley of the V would be parallel to tv. Do you have a floorplan you can scan & post, or other rendering of the space that would show the walls in relation to each other and the other architectural features? It's easy to look at and say "put a console with tv on the stair wall" but if that stair wall isn't high enough, it's a useless suggestion. :)...See MoreFireplace makeover I need help with a few details
Comments (18)Thank you for the great comments! I knew it would change the room but I'm surprised at how much it changed the look. When I look in here I almost can't believe it is the same room. I forgot to ask.. Do I need accessory for the mantle or leave it plain? I could do like a trio of small plants under the tv or similar? Patty-cakes42- I know what your saying and I really felt the same way before we had this house built. But, with the layout of this particular living room it is really what works best for the space. I've actually come to love it for the fact that it saves so much space in the room and to me looks better than a big entertainment center. I guess it just works for us and to me looks good. We thought about doing doors to hide the TV but I knew that we would just end up leaving them open all the time. Maybe closing them occasionally when guest come so we decided it wasn't worth doing....See MoreFireplace Makeover, Ideas Needed!
Comments (1)Hi Sierra, That is unique! And I agree with your thought, the stone is the best part. If it were me, I'd think about resurfacing the brick and tile above and below with one material to contrast in color and texture with the stone. Dark slate comes to mind. Looking around a little, soapstone might be better right by the fireplace. A medium-dark to dark gray with a low-contrast pattern might be a place to start. The trick will be finding something that compliments, but doesn't compete with the stone. (And paint the pole to match with a firebox rated paint.) Hope that helps! Doug...See MoreBeverlyFLADeziner
