Selling used furniture on Craigslist
Comments (5)Besides overpricing, one frequent mistake I see in Craigslist ad, is not making USE of the free ad. For example, I often see something like this: "Nice sofa, fair condition. $150. Call for details." The ad may or may NOT have a photo. A much better ad would include 2 or 3 photos, from different angle, maybe with a closeup of the fabric, and read like this: "Very nice 94" long 3 cushion sofa in a silver taupe stripe damask. This is a very comfortable sofa from a clean home. This piece is about 5 years old and we are only selling it so cheaply because we need the room for a new set of furniture. We accept cash only and are asking $100. We are located right off Hwy 41 at the North end of town." You answer most obvious questions in the ad, including measurements and condition. You appeal to the bank account by mentioning that YOU think it's priced attractively. And your photos should tell the rest of the story. I would not comment on pets in the home unless asked. Now. I have a question for you on your pricing. You said, "I have already marked them down $150 from my original price." Please don't think I'm trying to be snide, because I'm not. But if you intended to put them on the curb for FREE, why in the world would you price them so high that you've already marked them "down" $150?? Sofas, used, 12 yrs old, are not in high demand. Put $100 or less on them, fix your ad, and give it another shot. Wish you well...... Red...See MoreWhat would you do? Craigslist furniture purchase...
Comments (74)I found a beautiful arched porch that I thought I'd shop in for metromom. It's a nice option too. I really love that art, and I wish I could get a little more time to draw. I know that once I start this school junk, the drawing will just cease to exist for a number of years ...and the photoshopping. My love of money, however, will see me through these tough times!! : D The Swedish look really made me think "Mary Hartman". I think I'll shop her into one of your mock-ups. Comments (11)Good insights here: thanks, everyone. In fact, DH has nixed these already, so the point is unfortunately moot. I think they're pretty, but they were to be for him, as his prefab Target mission-style dresser is kaput. Friends don't let friends buy Target casegoods, is all I have to say, and it was a $225 lesson, grrr... But I will keep in mind for the future that I don't need to fear cat dander w/regard to Craigslist: Red, that was really informative. So, Fly, go nuts, they're yours! (: And Les, thank you for that observation: veneer isn't always problematic, of course, but we have two rough-and-tumble boys (three, if you count DH, and I often do). Allergies: I am slightly-but-manageably allergic to dogs, which is what we'll eventually get, and otherwise I only have allergy trouble for about a month each, in spring and fall. I have actually had great success recently with a nasal spray called Nasalcrom, available OTC at drugstores. No side effects like the ones I used to get with Zyrtec, and its effect is localized, so I prefer it... I'm glad you're having good results with Singulair, sue36; a friend of mine was on it and had horrific side effects, which still linger a year after she stopped taking it. Bodies are funny and unpredictable things....See MoreCraigslist: if you don't really know pricing, how do you decide?
Comments (15)It's what you feel is a good deal that counts when buying. Selling is a different issue, and it takes time. We sold vintage for years, and Ebay was the WORST resource EVER for uninformed buyers and sellers. What seems like a minor difference can be a major one when it comes to price (well, it looks *almost* like mine). Additionally, it seems that people assume everyone else listing the widget knows what they're doing, when they might just be flying blind too. The only good comparisions on Ebay are exactly the same as your item with BIDS-buy it nows and listings with 0 bids mean ziltch. And archived listings from more than even a few months ago might or might not be a good resource, as certain items ebb and flow like the tide (for a while, you couldn't touch a Duaflex camera, they were HOT for TTV photography, I think that's died down now-we don't sell vintage anymore-no space-so I haven't kept up on the trends). Then you've got sellers that inheritated something they were always told was "worth a lot of money". Well, maybe it was, once. And now...you can give it away, maybe (like those console radio/record players or sets of china, except certain patterns). Also, it depends on your location. We live in NYS. Where we live, I could sell something...say...an old wooden crate for $10, whereas it might sell for $30 in NYC. Vintage prices here are WAYY lower than there....See Morepudgeder
