I hate going to movie theatres as well, haven't gone in 20 years or more. I'm going to wait till it's out to stream but in the meantime I'm going back and watching all the seasons.

I am trying to talk DH into going. This movie is not his cup of tea. :-)

Yes they sell and rent DVDs still. Give it a couple months you can see it for less than $5.

Just curious why people don't enjoy going to the movies, as it's one of my favorite things to do. It helps that we have a small art theater very near us which shows really good films and has comfortable seats, along with an education program where you can take courses like Screwball Comedies of the 1930s or The Films of Martin Scorsese.

It was the top box office movie last weekend! That surprised me.

I plan to see it but I don't know if I'll go to the theater as it's not DH's type of show. I loved the series.

I personally don't go to the theatres because I don't like to be in crowds and not be able to see who or what is around me. It makes me very uncomfortable.

I will wait til it’s streaming (probably at Christmas).

I am not a ‘go to the movie’ person, probably because I once saw a theatre when the overhead lights were on and could see how nasty the seats were.

I don't go to the theatre because they won't pause the movie when I need to use the WC and the closed captioning devices theatres have are annoying.

I only go on Sunday nights. It is always empty. I too don't like to go to a packed theater.

Funny, we once did go on a Saturday night and laughed about the crowds.

I look at it as a "date night" with DH.

I saw it! It was all I'd hoped. A great story line and a few loose ends all wrapped up. And, of course, the costumes were magnificent.

We saw it yesterday afternoon. It was great and I’m glad they wrapped up the story lines. I do hate to see it end, but it was time.

This movie doesn't interest me but I echo Bookwoman's comment about why people wouldn't go to a movie theater. Too bad for those of you who miss out.

The large screens, the dramatic sound, the experience of immersion into the film is part of the magic and appeal of the experience. I don't care how big your TV is at home, it's not the same and not close.

WC time - throttle back on your fluid intake several hours before and go just before the movie starts. Unless you need to pee every 60 minutes, you should make it.

We saw it last night, in a theater similar to the one in Chi's photograph. Recliners, food, drink, table service.

It was OK. The cinematography and costuming were beautiful. The storyline was just meh, and there were so many plot devices included for various reasons - either to remind the audience what had transpired in the television series or to set up another Downton series later on.

To be honest, I was a little disappointed. I'm not sure what I was expecting, but the movie didn't fill any sort of "void" in my life or in my understanding of Downton Abbey in general. Maybe I was expecting too much - too much entertainment, too much new material, too much…something. I can't put my finger on it.

I'm glad we went to see it. My husband enjoyed it far more than I did, as he is ravin about it and can't wait to see it again. I don't need to see it again, nor do I even want to.

I have become a little bit of a germophobe and yes I have seen what it looks like with the lights on. I don't like being among strangers in a dark place, and I get annoyed when someone around me fidgets or makes noise or sneezes or coughs. I imagine all kinds of cockroaches (I live in Florida) and rats and head lice and bedbugs all over the place. It's not worth it.

I hope to see it and I agree on the big screen would be fabulous. A friend saw it and said the cinematography was beautiful. I thought it amusing, today my student who works at the local theater was AGHAST about all the OLD people who were at the theater this weekend!! It was number one and it wasn't teens who were attending for once!!

Did anyone see people dress up? I heard on the radio that some people dressed for the era!

I don't watch TV. I do go to the movies. Either by myself or my friend who goes to view the movie like me. No yakking, no eating, no slurping. I go late at night in the middle of week. I am often the only one in the theater.

I can't wait to see it. Will go in the afternoon - no crowds and local theater charges only $5 so if the movie's a dud, I won't have wasted much $$$.

We get DVDs from our library and donate back some of the money we've saved over buying books and other materials. Our library recently started printing the total retail value of withdrawals on the book receipt. We're close to $1K value already this year.

There is a current TV commercial that starts with a young woman with a flashlight, crawling on her knees on the floor in a movie theater -- oh, gag! I don't know what they are advertising because I close my eyes as soon as I see her doing that!

We saw it yesterday and both my husband and I enjoyed it very much. I loved all the story lines and Maggie Smith had some great zingers!!!

I am out of town on a business trip with my daughter; she took her infant and me to be her nanny. When I get back next week my sister and I are going.

Chi, that's what most of the theaters are remodeling to back in my big city hometown, unfortunately here in the sticks we have nothing like that.

I've been rewatching the series this past week -- finished season 3 and taking a little break. I surprised myself by being affected (again) by Matthew's sudden demise and didn't feel like jumping into season 4 just yet. .

I went today with two friends. I was reminded why I hate going to movies. These new smaller theaters cause one to have to sit far too close to the screen. Since I was using my transport chair, walking up the stairs to the top of the balcony was not an option. And then that sound - OMG, SO loud! I felt like my head was ringing when we left the theater. I also don't like seeing every single pore on an actor's face, magnified multiple times.

I wish they had done a few more closeups of Queen Mary's amazing jewelry as that woman had some jewelry! I know Julian Fellows has always been a stickler for details so I was surprised to see Lady Mary eating with gloves still on her hands - they usually have buttons under the wrist and when eating, one pulls out ones hand and tucks in the hand part of the glove, leaving the arm covering in place.

Did I like it? Yes, it was like visiting with old friends again. One of my friends who went had never watched the series and was totally befuddled throughout the entire movie. I can understand why, but what I can't understand is why she didn't watch the series but still wanted to see the movie! My other friend and I tried to give her the "cliff notes" of 6 seasons of Downton Abbey in 2 minutes but that was pretty hard to do!

I was saddened to see the Dowager Countess (Maggie Smith) tell Lady Mary about her failing health and a new diagnosis. I guess Miss Smith has decided that if there is yet another movie made, she will not be in it and is preparing the plot line for her demise. She's always been a treasure and also always has the best lines, though Mrs Crawley has some pretty good ones, herself.

The costumes are gorgeous and of course, so is Highclere Castle. What an amazing place. I'd so love to visit it sometime but think it unlikely that I ever will.

I loved it. My favorite character is Branson. What a dreamboat....

I saw it Sat. with my granddaughter at the matinee in a theater like Chi described. I had not been to a theater in about 20 years like many of you. I was so glad that I did not wait to see it on the TV. The technology in the theater was so impressive. It felt like I was moving through the rooms with the characters. We have a new 4K 65" TV but it does not compare to the big screen. We enjoyed it very much.

I saw the movie yesterday and LOVED it!! And yes, Branson is such a dreamboat! I don't think he was this hot in the regular series. But just adorable in the movie!!

Now that others mention it, I did notice in this small theater that coming attractions were so loud they hurt my ears. Or maybe I'm just getting old.

I do think they left a door open for a sequel to the movie. Hope they make one.

I'll probably wait for it to be available for streaming.

Going to the movies is our family’s favorite thing. We have multiple “Tavern” theaters near us, leather recliners, full bar and dinner service. However we usually reserve going to the theater for action type movies where the big screen adds to the experience. For character driven stuff like Downton Abbey we will watch at home. The usual trajectory of a movie nowadays is kind of predictable. If it’s a box office hit, it will stay in the theaters for a few months, then it will go to an online service like Netflix or Vudu and will be available for sale for a month or two, usually in the 15.99-21.99 range. Then it will become a rental for 5.99-8.99 range before ending up in the discount range. If it’s a box office so-so performer it will speed through to cheap rental pretty quickly.

I went to see it yesterday with my sister but when it comes out on DVD I will buy it. I watched all the series but I used closed captioning because I have trouble understanding the British accents. I missed some dialogue in the theater

Agree. I saw Dunkirk in the IMAX theater of the local cinemaplex. The volume was so exceedingly loud that even with industrial-strength (25 dB) earplugs that I happened to have with me, it was still painful to be in the theater.

I want to see it and Judy. Both look really good. I actually like going to movies. On the weekday, during the time school is in session, I like going to a nearby cheap theater with older style seats. Other times I like going to a theater in Lexington with reserve seating, hate getting too close to the screen and this prevents worrying about it. I'm thinking of going tomorrow to see one of these movies tomorrow.

To be honest, if it weren’t for the staff of Downton , I might have taken a nap. I did enjoy the widower meeting the young lady. Don’t want to give it away to new watchers.
