We're finally finished - a tour of our new kitchen!
Comments (31)What a wonderful playful looking space! Great green accents. I like how the added lights in the curved ceiling section really plays up the architectural lines. Really makes it a standout feature. Love all the drawers, the backsplash (of course!) and the improved layout. Thanks for sharing your LED color temperature solution. That drives me crazy too when they're not the same. It has been difficult to find the more neutral color temps (forget the exact kelvin temp at the moment), so your solution sounds great! I saw this really cool Lutron dimmer that reminds me of your space and would look really cool if it could work with your Insteon (I'm not familiar with this) dimming system, or if not, maybe something separate. In a single or a double switch plate, there is a thin vertical slot that has Green LEDs (also comes in Blue or White) that you can touch anywhere for the dimmer (all the way up is full On and any position lower is dimmed by seven levels I believe). And there is a small Amber light at the lowest point that softly glows when it is all off so you can find it in the dark. The wall plates are available in the 10 standard colors and 11 brushed metal colors so you could get a brushed aluminum or stainless steel looking one to match what looks like what you have (see the picture below). I'm going to use these in my bar in the Blue to coordinate with the granite countertops there, so just thought these would look cool in the Green for your great space. This is one of the most distinctive dimmers I have seen. The picture below is of the single in the Green with an aluminum plate (also comes in a double plate as well) and a link with the specifics. Just a thought for you if you haven't finished all of your switches. :-) (edited for a typo I didn't catch the first time) Here is a link that might be useful: Lutron Vierti dimmer switch This post was edited by cindallas on Mon, Sep 8, 14 at 16:56...See MoreGetting close to final plans: what are the red flags?
Comments (33)I definitely believe that the purpose of this forum is to point out possible downsides and offer alternatives for you to consider, then allow you decide which will work for you. We only want you happy with your kitchen in the end without having to ask, "Why didn't someone tell me?" That said, I feel I have to throw in one more post, because it would be such a major problem for me to have the cleanup and cooking zones overlap and criss-cross. I do like your original plan best, except for that issue. You said the kids don't usually clear the dishwasher while you cook, but I wonder why you'd want to limit that option if you can avoid it, and also wonder if they don't set the table while you cook. It seems so easy to me to swap the dish storage and fridge, and have the dw on the table end, which would separate your zones. You are trying to keep the fridge by the table, but that makes 3 cooling units in easy reach from the table. After working in zones for 10 months now, I can tell you that it's SO wonderful...So I had to give it one more push. ;-) I hate regrets and 2nd guessing, so work to help others avoid them, too. Best wishes. These are to show potential work paths. The first one has X's where people will stand or take up space. In the 2nd I moved the frig once more to give a more open corner by the stove....See MoreWe're Finally Moved In
Comments (7)Thanks everyone. We have had a few problems since I last posted. When DH was cleaning the bathroom floor we discovered that the floor boards near the toilet were rotted. We are getting estimates on this because our attorney feels that the previous home owner knew about it but did not disclose the information. Luckily the boards under the tub are okay. We are also having the kitchen and bedroom rewired because if we want the fans on we have to have the lights on as well. We did get our washer & dryer hooked up and just finished our first load of clothes. It is nice not having to go to the laundry mat anymore. I dropped some film off today to be developed. I asked the lady if she would check to see if my Kodak 110 film can be put on a CD. If it can I can post photos for everyone. Waiting to hear if I got the part time job I applied for too. If I get it I will only be 3 blocks from work. So far things are going smoothly. Just a couple of minor gliches to get past and we can finally feel "at home". Comments (14)Thanks, Karenseb! Even with a credit, I think we have to do something now anyway - since right now there is no toilet in there, and the old tile was loose where the leak had been. I wonder if that leads me back to just putting in the new (but not overly pricy) tile and a middle-of-the-road white toilet, since they'd probably use white for any future work. But I think to advertise it as a 2.5 bath house, a toilet has to actually be in place? Kind of a circular problem - I'd rather just give them the cost of any repairs in cash, but some repairs may be needed to sell it at all... Thanks!...See Moremegs1030
