I would not swap the dishwasher and trash pullout. I think you'd have a dishwasher open much longer than the trash and therefore would block entry to pantry? Or is this a case of overthinking? ;)

I did think of that, but it's a good size opening so dishwasher wouldn't block the whole thing and we could scoot the fridge over a bit. I kind of hate loading the dishwasher on the left but I guess it would be something I'd get used to since it does make more sense there.

We changed the position of ours so that the dishwasher was closer to the cabinet where we store dishes. So I understand why it's you are thinking about it. I'm right-handed and my dishwasher will now be on the left of the sink. But in terms of unloading, it will make way more sense.

Megs you are totally right as that upper cabinet to the right of the sink will be bowls/plates, etc which is what we use the dishwasher for mostly.

How wide is your island and what are the aisle measurements? I like the dishwasher to the right of sink near the pantry.

You do have a lot of cabinets, so it may not be crucial for storage, but I would switch the two lower cabinets to lower drawers. Even if you have large things to store, you could just do 2 15" drawers. I just really love drawers. After changing my kitchen to mostly drawers, I can't imagine going back to any normal lower cabinets other than the sink and corners.

Make sure your corner has a Super Susan, not a Lazy Susan. A Super has a turntable sitting on a shelf, so it is a lot stronger. A Lazy has turntables mounted on a pole with set screws, which tend to loosen and slip over time.

Do you need separate pullouts for trash and recycling? I have mine in the same cabinet, and there is plenty of room for 2 large cans.

You have one very narrow cabinet titled "lower drawers", but it looks like it is maybe 12" wide. That will be almost useless as drawer space. I see you already have a cutting board cabinet, which is great. Can you put cookie sheets in the other narrow cabinet? If you have to have a 12" lower, I think I'd put in shelves, and use it for long, narrow things: rolling pins, extra wide aluminum foil, that sort of thing.

Your lower cabinet next to the wine fridge can be drawers. Is there a reason the wine fridge isn't on the end? What do you plan to put on the open shelves? I hate to dust, so I would much rather have cabinets there. If you want to display pretty wine glasses, you can add glass fronts. The little upper in the corner is going to look lost on that big wall, and not be that convenient to use.

Have you planned out where everything will go in the new kitchen? It's extremely useful to do so at this point - you might end up configuring your cabinet a little differently if you realize there's no place near the range for potholders.

Do your upper go to the ceiling? If so, make sure you order extra shelves for all the uppers, to maximize storage space.

I have a little cutting board cabinet like yours - 9" wide. Mine has a drawer above, with is pretty useless (if I didn't save box tops and pop tops, I don't know what I could fit in there). More useful would be a tall door, with a couple of shelves for long, skinny things (as I mentioned above, for your other narrow cabinet). It depends on what YOU need to store.

I personally would put a full-height pantry cabinet next to the refrigerator. It will give you lots of extra storage and you don't really need the extra counter space there.

The upper and lower next to the fridge... could you make that an appliance garage for small appliances? Not sure you need counter space there.

megs... I was thinking that area next to the fridge could be the coffee station since we'd get the filtered water right from the fridge, all the mugs and coffee could go above in the upper cabinet. An appliance garage is an idea though, will have to see what extra that would be and if it would work in the budget!

Lisa... I've never had drawers for lowers but did add some here, I could just do all lower drawers right? What would be the need for cabinets (except for cleaning stuff which would be under the sink). I'll look into that.

I figured potholders could go across from the stove on the island in a drawer.

This drawing isn't exactly to scale so some things are out of whack but this is the gist of it. the two uppers on either end of the long wall with the windows are going to be approx 30" uppers. Our kitchen designer will draw it to scale lol. Uppers will all go to the ceiling for sure!! 8' ceilings.

It's funny I'm actually not an open shelf fan in the kitchen at all either but since it's such a big kitchen I feel like so many cabinets there would make it feel too heavy. Maybe I could do a corner cabinet and one on the end and shelves in between. It will be mostly decorative stuff I guess up there, we are going to build the shelves.

Moving the wine fridge to the end is an option but I'd need a panel put on the end right?

Yep, you will need an end panel next to the wine fridge. I was thinking it would be more convenient to get wine or beverages out of that fridge, and keep the drawer base closer to the rest of the kitchen. But again, it all depends on what you will be storing where. I figured the open shelves would hold wine glasses, which is why I was thinking a glass font cabinet might look nice there - and if it's on the end, it can easily be different from the rest.

You definitely want all drawers!

AnnKH yea that's what I'm going to focus on next, where we will put everything, in which cabinets and drawers. I think that'll help with that decision.

Agree with all lower drawers, especially if you have a big pantry for anything tall you need to store. I would change out that one next to the fridge for drawers. But keep 1 narrow cabinet for cutting boards and big trays.

Personally I would prefer glass front cabinets over shelves. Stuff on shelves just gets dusty.

donnatrus, thanks! Adding shelves there ourselves vs. 2-3 more upper cabinets (especially glass front) was helping us stay within budget. I am a big advocate for no shelves in the kitchen lol especially near range, but these are kind of an extension of the kitchen, more like a bar area. Once we really go through everything with the kitchen designer i'll get a feel for how much more we can spend and what would be the best option there.

Inventory everything you have, and think about how often you use it. Put things near their point of use: cooking utensils near the stove, knives and colanders near the sink, leftover containers near the cleanup area. Since my new kitchen was basically the same footprint as my old one, I had to make a conscious effort to figure out where things made the most sense, rather than put things back where they were before out of habit.

Also think about efficient storage. I put dividers in a deep drawer, so I can store cake pans and pie plates on their sides, instead of stacking them in a cabinet. The extra shelves in the uppers mean that I put tall things on one shelf, short things on another, so there isn't wasted space between my items and the shelf above (my kitchen isn't that big, so I have to make good use of every inch).

One of my goals of my remodel was to get things off the counters, so I have a knife drawer, and small appliances (including the toaster) go in the super susan. I put outlets inside a cabinet, so things being charged aren't sitting out on the counter. If there is a logical place for things, they are much more likely to get put away.

Have you thought of a prep sink on island and cleanup sink by where you have the wine fridge?

Because it seems like you have a tight work triangle, and lots of (expensive) counters and cabinets outside of it, which seems like a missed opportunity.

You might seriously consider making your upper corner cabinets an "L" shape cabinet or a true, angled, corner cabinet. I prefer the deeper shelves possible with an angled front.

Do make sure your lower cabinet drawers are deep enough to be useful. Have you planned for a specific place for your blender, toaster, mixer, etc.?

Your cooking spoons and spatulas and ladles need more depth than your dining knives, forks and spoons.

I like emilyam819's idea as it would make the DW more accessible for loading from two sides and you would have a nice open counter to stack dishes for loading. I think that you are giving up some functionality with the DW in either position on the back wall. A drawer stack on the end of the island facing the clean up sink and DW could be used for cutlery and dish storage. I would use a pocket door instead of the barn door and place the wine frig on the same wall as the refrigerator and use it as a beverage and breakfast zone. The prep sink could stay under the window or be moved to the island.

There's lots of great advice here, and it's exactly the stuff that made our remodeled kitchen far better than it would have been otherwise. One of the things you'll definitely want to think about is where to store dishes and silverware after they come out of the dishwasher. I'm wondering if it would make sense to switch the refrigerator and cabinet in your second drawing and then plan to store those things in the drawers and uppers. The dishwasher would basically open right into where many things go, which is one of the things in our kitchen that makes me (ridiculously) happy. Plus, the fridge would hide the coffee station things from the rest of the space.

cpartist... it will be 42-48" between sink and cooktop. We are doing a 33" fireclay farmhouse sink.

wilson853 - our original plan was the wine fridge next to the regular fridge but we felt like that other corner would have just been all cabinets and counters so we wanted another section over there and felt the wine/beverage area would be good there. We can have the barn door slide the other way, there is a big wall there too. But if we do put the wine fridge there on that end, what would you do with the other corner of several cabinets? Wouldn't it look so plain compared to the other side of the kitchen?

Avatarwalt... moving the fridge over is an option we had debated that but ultimately kept it on the end there. It does make more sense though!

casamacho, I like zones so that is why I would keep the beverage area to the right of the refrigerator as it will keep guests on the perimeter and allow them to grab a coffee or wine without walking into your work space. The other area could be organized as a baking zone and used as buffet space when entertaining. I'd also consider moving the recycle cabinet to make sure that you have enough space near the range for pots, pans, and other prep items. I like having a chef's drawer in my island. Decide what you need to store before committing to the Susan. Drawer bases on each side might be better.

I know you're nearing your final layout, but it really feels like you've smushed a lot of the action into that one corner. You mentioned it yourself that part of the reason the wine fridge is where it is is because that part of the kitchen is just cabinets...

Two thoughts on moving things around... they both use a prep sink - which you did mention you're not in love with - but take a look =)

The difference between the versions is really based on what kind of fridge you're going to have - sorry if you mentioned it and I missed it. Both have the micro next to the fridge (any thoughts on moving it to the pantry? It's using a huge lower cabinet in your layout...). Also, both include swapping the fridges - I did this not only b/c of increased functionality, but also, I feel like the way the open shelves are currently drawn may end up looking strange - they obviously end so that that upper cabinet in the corner can open, but I'd worry that the shelves will look truncated. In the versions below, as a cost savings, I've done open shelves between the fridge all the way to the outer wall (I put uppers above the wine fridge but you could do open shelves there too).

- With 48" wide aisle between the range and the island you should be able to have both the DW open and the drawer across the way for your dish & cutlery storage. I'm not 100% sure I see great spots for those in your current layout - esp if the DW is moved to the corner by the pantry.

I agree that the work areas all seem concentrated in one space. How long is the wall the range is on? Everything to the left of the range is outside the work area and seems like a missed chance to make it function for you. With a kitchen this large a prep and clean up sink makes a lot of sense and allows multiple people to do multiple tasks at the same time.

In your pantry, consider beginning with corner cabinets and then making the floor to ceiling shelves on one side deeper than on the other side -- give yourself room to turn around and even add a place for ladder or step stool.

While you're at it, include a closet or place in a mud room or laundry room or pantry or elsewhere specifically for your vac and mop and broom and dust mop and wax mob, etc. as well as for your iron and ironing board.

damiarain.... thanks for the ideas, we definitely want the fridge right outside the pantry. The entry to the house (it's a front facing kitchen) is right on the other side of that wall where you moved the fridge to. I'd rather not have it there.

muskokascp... it's a 21' wall! This will definitely function for us, we thought of the range on the far wall across from the fridge but ultimately I like everything close to each other, just that corner had me scratching my head which is why we moved the wine fridge there to make that a drink station. I will look into the cost of a prep sink as it seems most people think that's a good idea.

I'm not sure I understand... the entry is behind the wall that I proposed moving the fridge to... and the concern with having it there is ... that it's creates a sort of wall when you round the corner towards the kitchen, kind of closing off the kitchen?? Usually folks are more concerned with rounding the corner and having the fridge plainly visible (like it would be in its original location). In this case, you could move the fridge over thus having open counter top at the end of the run (with the micro moving to i.e. the pantry)

- It's also good that you're planning where you'll store things - for instance, in your current version, I'm not seeing a large enough, conveniently place drawer for your cutlery...

You have so much lovely space in your kitchen, but your microwave is in the middle of your already tight work space. I would utilize the bottom part of your kitchen by moving the microwave from the island to the bottom part of your kitchen. I would move the wine fridge to the top of your kitchen, making the space next to your fridge a designated beverage space.

If you are considering the prep sink, here is an older reveal which shows the clean up sink on the 'L' and many great storage ideas. Personally I like the refrigerator near the pantry for the ease of putting groceries away quickly and it is in a perfect spot if you add the prep sink. I think that the MW should be near the refrigerator and beverage area. We have an under sink filter on our prep sink which is also teed off to the ice maker. Very handy when I need to fill the coffee pot or a lot of water glasses quickly. Sorry to say that I just am not a fan of the DW near the pantry entrance.
