We're Finally Moved In

DH and I are finally moved into our new home. It is absolutely beautiful here except for all the rain.

Moving day wasquite an experience. Our attorney called as we were loading the truck and said there was a problem. The buyer decided to change mortgage companies at the last minute and almost didn't get approved. Luckily his previous bank agreed to "take him back" and processed the mortgage. Then while we were driving to our new home my BIL missed the exit on the interstate and we had to wait 30 minutes before he was able to turn around. Then when we actually got to the house it stated raining. But we made it!

We got our appliances and tomorrow we get our washer hooked up. New carpet comes next week. I still have about 50 boxes in the basement to unpack.

Best part is DH and I bought a patio set and we have been sitting out every night under the stars.

I love my new Home!!!

I'm glad it worked out so well for you. You'll have to post some before and after pictures (unless you are camera-to-computer challenged, like I am).

Gold, shes welcome to come! Our photobooth is going to be a bit unconventional. We`re setting up a site with props and we`ve got some small dry erase boards and will have guests write their sentiment on the boards and that will serve as the guestbook. In addition, people can just use it for fun-we`ll have a digital camera available for the guest book, and pretty much everyone already has a digital camera or phone. I might look into a printer. We`re also.having lawn games, such as lawn yahtzee, lawn Jenga and lawn scrabble-using oversized pieces. Craft beers and Two Buck Chuck wine...the kids choice. They want it simple. I know-but its their big day and most of the crowd will be more interested in the mico-brew any way.

First, I'm a big fan of mixing different finishes in decor, as long as they harmonize. I think I would be able to live with a light cherry bed in an otherwise walnut room... Second, while that article on strippers is very helpful, in my country the chemical ingredients are not always listed, so you need to sit down in the supply store and read labels on all the products available for ease of use and clean-up. I've recently retested a bunch of strippers for removing "just" varnish-type finishes (though antique only, not sure if your modern finish would qualify), and find that the strippers deemed "safe" are doing pretty well - nice as they can be used indoors. The downside of all of them is that they require water clean-up, and not all wood structures take well to being washed. If you think that would be a problem, try something called EZWay, available by mail order. It does not require water clean-up. But for me it is a "do outside only" product as it smells. Third, have you considered buying used, via craigslist or a local thrift/consignment/used furniture store? Especially if you're willing to tinker and perhaps refinish, you should be able to find some nice deals. KarinL

Hi Julieh- I completely understand your dilema--I have been having trouble finding just the right backsplash for about 8 months now, too! Today I was in Home Depot and was looking at tiles (again-- they keep bringing in new things!)and I saw something that might work for you, since you are looking for a "warm" but not beige marble. They had some very beautiful 2 x 2 " White Grecian" marble (on 12 x 12 sheets)--It was much "warmer" in tone than Carrera. There was lots of beautiful, subtle gold and brown veining in it as well as a little bit of grey. It was very soft, and not very busy. Of course, each shipment of "White Grecian" might be slightly different. At least with the big box stores, however, you can kind of pick through them and get the lot with just the right shading or variation. I'm not sure where you live, as I'm sure that their in-stock selection might vary by region. I am in Maryland. That stone is supplied by MS International, --just in case you have one of their granite and stone wwarehouses near you. You can order it in various sizes and styles at HD's online site. I agree that the carrera and beige botticino is not working with the walls and countertop. By the way--have you noticed that Home Depot is carrying lots of Jeffrey Court (high end supplier) mosaics in stock now? So much for people who say that Home Depot tiles are not good quality! HTH. Thank you both for your replies. Chispa- I clean our dishes the exact same way. And the switch for the garbage disposal is on the right side of the sink, so I think it makes more sense to have the disposal on that side. That way I don’t have to reach across to flip the switch and two people can more easily work in the kitchen since the disposal will be on the prep side. I would like to add an instant hot water dispenser as well. Where would you recommend placing that faucet? Maybe on the left side? I don’t want a cluttered look so I’m planning for just a single hole faucet and the instant hot water to be cut into the countertop.

Thanks everyone.

We have had a few problems since I last posted. When DH was cleaning the bathroom floor we discovered that the floor boards near the toilet were rotted. We are getting estimates on this because our attorney feels that the previous home owner knew about it but did not disclose the information. Luckily the boards under the tub are okay.

We are also having the kitchen and bedroom rewired because if we want the fans on we have to have the lights on as well.

We did get our washer & dryer hooked up and just finished our first load of clothes. It is nice not having to go to the laundry mat anymore.

I dropped some film off today to be developed. I asked the lady if she would check to see if my Kodak 110 film can be put on a CD. If it can I can post photos for everyone.

Waiting to hear if I got the part time job I applied for too. If I get it I will only be 3 blocks from work.

So far things are going smoothly. Just a couple of minor gliches to get past and we can finally feel "at home".

Thanks for the update--thought you were just busy unpacking. That's not good news about the floor in the bathroom. Hope it isn't too costly.

Having a w/d is the epitome of luxury to me. I'll never forget those dreaded trips to the laudromat in this heat even though it was years ago.

Hope you get the job--sounds ideal being so close to home. What would you be doing?

I got the job! It's a part time secretarial position at a local church. Full time jobs are hard to find around here unless you want to travel 40 minutes. With the price of gas I will save a lot by walking to work.

The lady who hired me said the committee voted 100% to hire me. That made me feel good. Pay is pretty good for part time and at least it will bring in some extra cash. I start Monday and its from 9:00-1:00.

Yeah!!!!
