Am I the only Southerner that cannot make fried apple pies?

What a disaster I had this evening making fried pies. I thought it would be simple. I hope someone can give me some guidance on what I have done wrong. I do think I have a few ideas. First I wanted to make my own dough, I thought it would be so much better than a pie crust, or Grands biscuits. I found a recipe of Paula Deen's thinking I can't go wrong. Her recipe for the dough consisted of using one cup of cold unsalted butter instead of using shortening.

When I went to cook the pies I used an electric frying pan. The pies were quite flaky and fell apart everywhere. I had the temperature of the frying pan at 350. I made sure the grease was hot and not only did they fall apart but very greasy. Nothing went right.

To my experts, please help.
