Ignore the chilling hours and plant what you want. If you like juicy, sweet apples, you'll also want Dorsett Golden and Anna. Fuji doesn't need a pollinator, but Gala would help fill in the void between the Anna harvest in late June and the Fuji harvest in November.

Fujis are the most delish apples in the supermarket aren't they? I am thinking of growing one myself, however I read that they tend to take a bit longer than most to get productive (like 5 years?) So I am reconsidering a Dorsett Golden and a Pink Lady instead.

Look on the kuffel creek web site to get more info about growing apples in SoCal. You'd be surprised at what varieties have done well in Riverside on only 200 chill hours.

Have 5 dwarf-sized apples now planted in a small back yard. Zone 23-24 - San Diego coastal (no chill hours). Anna, especially produced tasty apples that were good for sauce, a bit soft.

Golden Dorsett - more for fresh eating but sweet - like Golden Delicious in flavor, but looking a lot like regular Red Delicious in shape, I'm happier with the Dorset flavor - it appears to be an off-shoot of Red Delicious as a parent plant?

Ein Sheimer - have heard negative reports - not known otherwise. Anna good enough to plant another for more apple sauce preserving here.

I'm pleasantly surprised with Anna and Golden Dorsett. Last fall planted Ein Sheimer, another Anna and Gala - too new to comment on fruit - but growth looks promising.

Forgot to mention Anna makes killer pies; pick them just a tad bit green and baking really wakes up a spicy flavor in them. A bit strange to bake apple pie in June however...

Yes, but the apples have to compete with the peaches, nectarines, and blueberries we're picking around then; too bad they can't have the glory all to themselves.

Fuji is a problematic apple with its weedy, vegetative growth habit, but the amount of time before harvest will be highly affected by both rootstock and pruning method.

Some apples can be just allowed to grow until they start bearing, removing only overly thick branches, but I think Fuji should be trained very open from the get-go unless it's on a rootstock with the vigor of M26 or less. In otherwords, remove whole branches to create an open tree and don't cut back the branches you leave except secondaries more than half the diameter of a scaffolds leader (at point of attachment).

Secondaries are the branches directly attached to the scaffold and tertieries are the branches attached to secondaries.

Grow anything on m111. They will start bearing 2nd year and can be kept low
to bag the fruit. dorsett good and sweet fresh And cooked and canned as applesauce or pie filling. just make the filling sans crust, put in sterile jars leaving 1/2 " headspace pints, 1" quarts and process 30 min pints, 40 quarts
cook the filling in a pan first. Make sure bubbles are out of jars with a very very
clean plastic knife.
anna a bit tart but good. either picked before full sweetness last a long time in the fridge. BUT I would go for dorsett and pettingill and tropic sweet. You
won't be sorry. Bay Laurel also sells dwarf trees that grow like 8 ft tall. be
sure to watch for borers and spray when needed sparing bees! they took
down my dwarf dorsett. It got like a deep gray bark and there they were under there and killed the entire tree. Good luck.

A few months ago, I placed a Fugi Apple seed in a window pot and in a few days it sprouted! It is now 9 inches tall and doing very well. I have it in a larger pot and have transferred it 2 times since the seedling come up. It is still in the window. Now I have 8 other seedlings all Fugi but different apples, from the store. They are also growing very well. When I took them from the apples, I had eaten , they were already sprouting. I would like to know when should they be alright to grow in my yard? Or can I keep them in a pot? I know I will have to get a larger pot eventually. Any advice would be helpful, I am very fond of these trees, since I have never grown any apple trees from seeds or at all. I am overwhelmed by all I am finding here on the internet. Thank you . Bigbadgardener, you won't go wrong with Anna. I have Anna here in the hot, hot SFV and it does fine. There's also Beverly Hills that doesn't require lots of chill hours.

The Fuji Apple is the most popular of all, but the Anna Apple is gaining in popularity.

are you aware tharpt apples grown from seed do not resemble the mother tree? Your fuji seeds will not grow up to bear Fuji apples. You will have who knows what apples.

Apple trees from seeds are likely to be full size trees, 20 ft tall and usually take longer to bear fruit (8-10 years) Growing them in pots would dwarf them but how well full size trees would do in pots I don't know.

I also planted anna and dorsett golden in our garden and it's is in fruiting but the main problem is that the best result to till date not seen. I have problem in fruit colour and taste and harvested period of anna and dorsett golden and what is the suitable time of harvest and my location is Palampur Kangra himachal pradesh India.
