Help! Lawn repair after sewer replacement
Comments (4)How much of the lawn did they tear up? Wasn't it only a strip about 6 inched wide??? Seems to me a 4-inch sewer line would not need to be dug out 10 feet across. Unless what we're looking at is where they spread the "left over" soil after they filled the trench and leveled it. If that is what happened, you have a permanent problem. All the soil that came out of the trench needs to go back into the trench. Otherwise in 3 years, after all the soil has settled, you are going to have a new trench where the sewer line is. There is no left over soil after digging a hole in a lawn. It all has to go back into the hole. As for what to do now, what kind of grass do you have? Yes, it is too late to seed but not too late to put sod down. You can do that any day of the year. You might try raking the soil off of the buried grass. Otherwise it is certainly smothered. Rake it toward the sewer line trench and see if you can mound that trench line up. I promise it will settle back down as time goes on....See MoreWe're moving....now what about the roses?
Comments (19)We are almost done with the same process, but not on such a grand scale! It's the best time of year, when things are dormant, to move them. We moved several figs, a small vineyard, and a few roses. Anytime you have to cut roots to dig them out, you need to cut the branches so that they don't die from lack of roots. They will do fine, even the huge ones!! I heard the word, "farm," and I wondered if the goat would eat your roses, but on recheck, you don't have a goat, right? Law School is well worth the money. My son went that route and is very successful. The key is to find a niche in which nobody in your town specializes. Then, you become the "go to" guy, and people from other towns come to you as your fame grows. He is in Southern California and has clients in Northern California as well. Being located in Wine country, he specializes in wineries and the legal issues of that entire sector. He also does real estate and contract law. You can make a ton of money as an attorney as long as you hang out your own shingle and work for yourself. Good luck with all of it! Comments (31)marineguy, bhshaman, It sounds like you guys have it pretty well figured out. My wife and I are expecting our first! Maybe things will change once the baby arrives but the way it's looking now it's going to be a footrace though to see who gets to spend more time at home with our child. She's a busy vet and of course I'm a doc, both professions with type A personalities galore but I guess we both feel like some things are more important than money or professional prestige. I wouldn't care if someone were to call me a "househusband". People on their death bed never say "I wish I spent more time at work." Don't get me wrong, we're not exactly slackers but the organization I work for asked me to head up a new clinic. I really had to think twice before taking it on. As I said in a previous post, our newest vehicle is Jenn's '01 Camry. We can bicycle to work so we don't put on many miles. We live in an established neighborhood near the university in our town. Many of my colleagues have opted for swanky new houses. As far as I can see all it's done for them is smaller lots and more restrictive covenants. We're lucky 'cause we have 3 non-taxable retirement vehicles. One that is paid for entirely by my organization, one that is matching and one that isn't matched but is also pretax. I also have some money in a Canadian governmental hospital workers retirement fund that not only grows with interest (guaranteed a minimum of 10%) but is also indexed to inflation. (If you live in Canada it is very advantageous to be firmly attached to the gov't teat. My sister for instance who is an ICU nurse and clinical instructor has received 1 year of 70% pay for each of her maternity leaves.) Two of our vehicles were bought new, one used but we plan on driving them 'til the wheels fall off. I agree with marineguy that it's often not worth it to pay cash for a vehicle. All our vehicles are paid for but if I was in need I would just wait for one of the no interst for 5 yr specials and leave my money in some interest bearing investment....See MoreWhat’s a good safe cure to stop or slow root entering sewer line?
Comments (13)Thanks for sharing the This Old House method of lining a cast pipe. I had my pipe inspected with a camera yesterday. We found a deteriorated break (bottom left side) vs a snap break just before the pipe makes a downward brand. I feel the downward bend is due to my raised front entry that you step down 5” to a Hallway or Den. I feel my cutters have been hanging up at the start of the bend due to seeing bent metal vs snapped cast. I hope the liner will work and be the most economical. Helpfully this will be the only damage since 15’ of pipe was replaced before this point and it all showed to be still good since 03.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /> Another down side is I was not cleaning to my 4” line in this 2” line compared to the camera’s measurements. My 50’ cable was coming up 15’ short compared to the camera. The entry, trap, cable cage and a 45 degree across the 10’ kitchen area accounts for maybe 6’+ differences vs 15’???? It appears and sounds to be draining fine but I can see and know there is a problem at this point and grease and Etc 15’ to the 4” line (in the 50’ wide house). This would have been detected in 03 if I had let the Tech pressure clean the line to the 4” line (for an additional 100.00) vs me thinking I was cleaning enough. I will try to share a PrintScreen shot taken with my camera from my screen LOL to show the damage. I have had trouble capturing Pics from the video the Tech gave me. Has anyone in the <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Dallas/Fort Worth area had a 2” cast pipe repair using the epoxy sleeve method and by what company?? PS. I hate to think my wife is trying to get me to move from our 1973 purchased home, enlarged/enhanced in 1977. I’m ready if we can match the comfort of this 70’ X 120’ lot Holding my 2 trailers and Stuff....See Moremichelle Cole
