Comments (20)Wow, I never thought about my hosta being improved by the wild birds coming to my garden. Naturally, I feed the birds, and place bird baths and water bowls on the ground as well, for the turtles. One thing you may think about doing at your retirement community is having it certified as a wildlife habitat. Or , choose to go the route of a Bird Friendly Habitat. You get the signs after filling out the check list of what qualifies you, and then you pay something like $35 to get the sign....from the National Wildlife Federation. My small garden is certified for both Wildlife and Bird Friendly. The biggest stumbling block for my qualification was a pile of brush. That is what gives cover for the rabbits and other more timid wildlife. But we used the neighbor's brush pile just on the other side of the fence, and she leaves it there permanently. Screened from view by our jasmine climbing the fence, and with vines crawling all over it, you'd never know it was there. May I suggest for your Hosta Island, a water basin sitting on the ground, which a turtle could get access to? Last summer, during the droughty dry times, they were dying of thirst. And a high birdbath is not accessible to them. The one visiting my garden tried to suck moisture from a brick and the wet dirt. S/he never ate a hosta. They do eat garden pests....and tomatos and strawberries, but not enough to hurt....See MoreBeautiful 2020 roses in my garden
Comments (110)Thank you Carol, Alameda, and Nola. I feel blessed to be able to grow roses in my garden and feel even more blessed to be able to share the beautiful roses with others. Here are some roses in my garden: A Night of Magic (bred by @dave_bang_roses), Ebb Tide, Princess Charlene De Monaco, and the forever graceful roses from @david_austin_roses: Jude the Obscure, Olivia Rose Austin, and Boscobel. Comments (68)@portlandmysteryrose Hmm, let's just say I live in a small farming town halfway between Denver and Fort Collins 🙃 it's beautiful here in its own right, if you like the prairie look. In fall it's lovely (well, I love this landscape in all seasons) Mostly flat, fields on fields of drying corn and huge hay bales, kissed with frost that sparkles in morning sun. Fall colors touching the leaves, the last of the bright yellow sunflowers alongside all the roads contrasting with a clear blue sky, the Rocky Mountain range clear in the distance with snowy peaks. Geese everywhere right now lol. Bald eagles and osprey are a common sight, red tailed hawks are often found on the telephone poles, American Kestrels prefer to perch on the giant rolling sprinklers in the fields. The coyotes yip at night, fox tracks are a treasure to find in fresh snow. And of course the unavoidable rush of the occasional summer storm, lightning striking the ground nearby shaking your house, winds testing your nerves as they blow impossibly fast, slamming hailstones against your house in a deafening cacophony. I'd never even seen this type of landscape before moving here, I know a lot of people find it boring and consider places like this "flyover areas" but I fell in love with it unexpectedly. I have been here for a few years and have not gone a single day without thinking the mountain silhouette was priceless....See MoreHosta F 2021 ......................
Comments (71)The last pic in the Hosta Library shows the effects of sun/shade on First Frost. The full shade one does look green on the edges. I wonder if Autumn Frost reacts the same way. I've never seen Ben Vernooij do this. It just seems to get lighter for me. Although, pics in the Hosta Library do show it with greenish edges. Its hard to know when those pics were taken. I've always assumed it was just color variation early in the season. Perhaps that is the difference. Now I need some more Hosta so I can experiment....See MoreIngrida
