Cold hardy field test on kumquats and other citrus. Note that meiwa and nagami were grafted to sour orange and not to poncirus trifoliata or one of its hybrids. Note in the link in my original entry shows the the sour orange and meiwa are not compatible. Most of the kumquat hybrids were on their own roots. This include the Nippon orangequat which scored at the top. I have no idea what an orangequat taste like as I never was able to find one. I have had fruit from 4/11 of my avocado varieties. They will all flower in the season as mine are grafted. Not all hold fruit if they are to young and drop them. But that is not true for everyone. There are many factors that play into a tree holding fruit set including weather, temperature, pollination etc....... I've known people who have had 2-3 year old trees that were grafted produce fruit and hold on the tree. I'm one of them who did so in containers with a Mexicola and Wurtz. You can see them in the Avocado forum under container trees. My Wurtz ( Little Cado ) has 30 plus fruit on it this year and is in a 24inch box and my Mexicola is in a raised bed now and I'm expecting it to fruit this year and several other trees that are now in the ground. I will update the group this summer. I'm expecting fruit from my Fuerte, Pinkerton, Stewart, Bacon, Mexicola and Wurtz. My other trees are still to young.

Hi Tony Doe, Your Longan there looks healthy to me and with a few new branches of new reddish leaves. They look very pretty there. I'm thinking if they have new flushes, they ought to have blooms? I'm asking this question as one of mine is also sending out a lot of new flushes and I'm hoping that eventually they'll push out some blooms as well. I've been feeding them with fish emulsion, liquid compost and epsom salt. By the way, thanks so much for the link. The guy there suggested fertilizing with potassium chloride (?) I wonder if that is something you can get from Home Depot. I've read that this chemical has to be handled with cautious as it's something they use in fire crackers. But, if it works, I'm at least going to try as I can't wait to make my bloom for me this year. I don't have luck with growing longans as long as I can remember. I now realized that they are susceptible to web worm and they do not like shady areas. I planted a few of them in the south side of my yard where there are two huge oak trees overhanging and they are host to webworms. So, they died young with disease even though they were planted in the ground. Last year, I planted two more new ones in my north side with plenty of sunshine and they seem to be doing well. Here are some pictures. Biew Kiew is blooming and Kohala is sending out new flushes. Please update how your longan is doing. Gorgeous! Yes I can definitely see the lighter coloration. Thanks Evan. I will be repotting the kumquat into 5-1-1 soon so I hope to see even more growth after that. So just out of curiosity, how many lbs of fruit do you get off your trees per year? Wait that would be a good new thread, I'll start it now!
