You have a workable situation very similar to one we encountered a couple of years ago when we had a frameless shower door installed in a renovated bathroom. I would HIGHLY recommend that you have a professional do the installation from the measurement, ordering, and final installation. Due to circumstances I won't go into, an installer who did not make the initial measurements tried to do the installation for our project. He was unable to make the shower door work. To make a long story short, it took several months to get it right. The good news was that we had worked with a reputable kitchen-bath showroom who stood behind their product so we didn't suffer any loss other than the inconvenience of the delay. Had we been the ones who had done the measurements, I'm afraid we would have had to absorb the financial loss of a quite expensive shower door.

On Dec 1st the OP said U-channels were "ugly" and he asked if -- for any reason -- steam showers in particular needed them more than regular showers. The big question is Why so many glass shower panels are installed with U channels. This Is The Question. With Channels or Not With Channels. Any shower enclosure. When I bought glass, they insisted they re-measure my measurements and then they ALL tried to convert that into Channels holding glass (("...At least one Channel, sir...")) I held my ground and told them to silicone it. The glass could not be cut smaller to fit into a channel, I wanted what I wanted and the best guys said "well OK if you insist..." It turns out that when they order the glass (cut and tempered) a normal size variance occurs because of the sanding need to get a flat straight edge. So they all want to have a Channel to hold the normal variation (normal margin of error). It requires more human work to get a piece of glass that is the size you want it to be within a 1/16th or 1/8th inch. Then they have to lean on their supplier of tempered glass to do One Good Job and not just a run of the mill job. In any case, silicone can compensate for some of the variance. Silicone is just one way of gluing them. Other methods exist also. HTH, and I am not in the business nor am I considering getting into the business. -david

I am in Oklahoma, so $800 will buy me a custom glass shower panel, plus installation costs. People forget that some states have a lower cost of living. I have noticed that some of the glass screens (panels) have a small fixed panel by the shower head side, and the rest of the panel will open outward so you can turn the water on. Seems to me you could still get wet that way, and there would be a small space between the fixed panel and the swing open panel so water could potentially splash out there. I am undecided about glass doors too, so I would be interested in what you decide. I am thinking about a fixed glass panel on the 48" side and leaving the 36" side open, but I have not decided. The other 2 sides will be tiled. In my bathroom with a shower/tub combo, I am getting a bi-fold glass screen that folds either in or out.

From the CRL site (your hinges may not be the Geneva but the adjustments are all the same): The CRL Adjustable Geneva Series has taken our popular Geneva Hinge to a new level. Adjustment to accommodate the desired angle (up to 90 degree) is done after the door is installed. Once the door is hung, simply loosen the Allen set screws and turn the door to the desired closed position. By merely tightening the Allen screws your door will self-center to the desired closing position. The door can swing 90 degree inward and 90 degree outward (adjusting angle from factory set position will reduce 90 degree swing in that direction). For doors pulling outwards only (using a clear door jamb), you can adjust the hinge to close 5 degree inside the shower area, thus having the door close snugly against the jamb.
