Blackout Shades vs Light Filtering Shades

I live in a semi attached house and don't get much natural light in on the one side of the house where the kitchen, living room and dining room windows are. So I was wondering should I put Light filtering shades there or if I'm worried about privacy and the neighbors looking in would blackout shades be unusual to put in those rooms?

Hi Jim,

You can have the best of both worlds...light and privacy! Hunter Douglas makes quite a few products that will do both. Duette Architella, Solera, Silhouette, just to name a few. It would be best if you set up a consultation with a window treatment professional. They will be able to guide you through the features and benefits of each product.

I use all black out shades, but, I open mine up completely all day. They are only for night time use. Any shade will block out a whole lot of light, if left covering the window during the day. I only have neighbors on the sides, none in front, nor in the back. I really dont have to worry about neighbors looking in here. I dont think I would want any shade even if light filtering covering my windows during the day. If privacy during the day is a big issue, how about using sheer curtains pulled. That gives privacy from neighbors and also allows light to come in and you can look out through them.

I've never heard that Solar Shades are to be used on the exterior only and I've seen plenty of use on double pane windows within the house. If a shade had an insulating effect and was sealed along the edges or had sealed side tracks, then that would not be safe to use with double pane. Solar screens are just that.....screens. They go outside the window just as any other type of screen is used. Roller shades can be decorative lightweight window coverings, but the term 'roller' is also used for the Solar Shades since they are usually on some type of roller system. slowjane, we have a retractable awning for an east facing room on our house in Northern California and we love it. We were using the room as a nursery and in the summer it would be uncomfortably hot by late morning just when the baby wanted a nap -- the awning solved that. As a bonus, our patio is now useable in the summer. Ours was probably around $1000? ordered through Costco, but it is motorized and I'm guessing it's 12-15 ft wide (it spans a set of French doors and two additional windows). I'd guess you might get a manual retractable awning for a single window for a lot less? Good luck.

That is really just a personal preference. I like light in the morning so I usually have no shades down in the bedroom, but I did install some blackout shades because my husband has to sleep during the day sometimes. I thought that gave us both options

I have the plain old blackout cellular shades but I would have chosen the blackout/light-filtering type if (a) I wanted daytime privacy or (b) I wanted to prevent the sun from shining in without darkening the room.

Remember the Spotlight Effect. Nobody really cares what you are doing and darkening the rooms may make them less pleasant to be in.
