Awnings vs. Solar Shades vs. Exterior Shades?

Hi all,

I'm new to this forum (usually you can find me over in gardening) and not sure this is the right place for this question but seems like the best bet.

We have a west-facing window in the bedroom that really heats up in summer. I've been researching awnings, solar shades, exterior Coolaroo style roller shades and wondering if anyone has any advice.

Main concern: solar heat gain! Our tenant's house has the old-fashioned aluminum awnings which seem to work well - very common in our neighborhood, though I know many people think they are too old-fashioned. But is there anything that reduces solar heat gain as much? Our budget is limited - a few hundred bucks max.

One advantage of a roll up shade is we can enjoy the benefits of the solar gain in winter. But I'm not sure they work as well since they would trap the heat near the window.

Any advice, experiences would be super helpful!!
