Comments (2)Quick update- I have spent all day/night (literally for the past 13 hrs and it is now almost 1am) fretting over the possible death of my guys; reading and reading and becoming more and more confused between the various websites' info. One thing that has not confused me is the confidence everyone on THIS site has in Al's GM [Al, how r u not mass producing this already?! ;-) ] The current status of my guys are that they r not sitting in water but have received 2 very hot and steamy treatments in my bathroom over the course of the night- i am hoping this will mAke due by supplying SOME semblance of water w/o drowning them.... one website I read mentioned letting the roots dry out??? Again- lil Miss Confused over here :-/ All is (hopefully) not lost bc thru my trusty google search and Turface's website, I've located a dealer who is less than 5 miles from me! :-D I'm emailing the unsuspecting manager tomorrow and hopefully will be able to move forward w/ what seems to be one of the hardest of the materials to find. *fingers crossed* I will admit that altho I have pics, I am simply too embarrassed to post them :( and also have further confused myself by reading mentions of the 5:1:1 mix but out of pure exhaustion have not fully read up on-yet. It sounds like Al's GM works for all of my guys including all of the succulents I have managed to NOT kill (yaaaay me!). From the fellow forum members' posts, sounds like I can find the proper bark and granite supplies at my local Home Depot. Al - I know you are out there somewhere and I thank you for sharing this knowledge with the rest of us newbies!!! Will post again RE: the process!...See MoreHelp! Planting 20 trees tomorrow and I need quick advice
Comments (12)I talked to my husband when he got home from work last night. We're not using any of those bags of soil. We're using all native soil. We've also decided to plant these trees over 2 days. He works second shift so we don't have all day to do it. He's just going to dig a hole in a part of our yard and then when he's done with it will fill it with some topsoil or something. Funny that someone brought up a tiller. We already tried that idea. Well, sort of. We tried to rent one from Home Depot earlier this week, and they said we couldn't rent it yet because it's too muddy outside and they don't want any mud getting on the machine. We told the guy we would never return the machine with any mud on it but he insisted no one can rent the tiller yet. If all we were doing was planting trees it would be one thing but once we plant we are committed to putting up vole fencing around it. We've already got all the poles put up. Where we are planting we can see vole trails everywhere. Not to mention we also have to stake these trees (I stake every tree I plant for 2 seasons) because they are going to be in the prevailing wind section of our yard. The trunks and branches on these 2 foot European Hornbeam fastigiatas are so tiny! They look like they could snap right off. I smiled to myself this morning when I re-read my original post. I was completely panicked when I wrote it. I'm calm about it now. We're planting half today and staking and fencing them, and then the other half tomorrow on his day off. It'll be fine. I see people on videos all the time dig a hole to plant a tree and put the dirt back in and have enough to backfill, but we never do. And we put every bit of dirt we dig out of the hole on a tarp so as not to lose any of it but we still don't have enough....See MoreAdvice on 'reloading' closet
Comments (21)I don't like my shoes on the floor either. I used to store them on the shelf on a shoe rack above the closet rod which worked for me, until we added more shelving to the side of the closet. Now, they're all on slanted shelves, 3 pair to a shelf, and I can easily see the pair I'm going for. That's my favorite system to date, and since my dh didn't have any kind of ''system'' for his shoes, he adopted my former shoe shelves for his closet. It's working for him too, and eliminates the mess on the floor. I prefer to keep the floor space cleared, except for a scale that lives there, and when I sweep the bedroom floor, it's easy to hit the closet floor at the same time. Personally, I would hate steel hangers, but I realize everyone has different preferences. (My mom also likes slick fabrics to sleep in so she can get out of bed more easily! Maybe that's why TS likes them...it's easy to pull the clothes off the hangers.) The Ultra Slim hangers at Bed Bath and Beyond have worked very well to give me back much needed real estate in my very small closets. (I've had trouble with things falling off the hangers, so I also like the fact that clothes stay on.) My dh wasn't convinced until he moved our seasonal clothes from the basement to the closet, and finally realized how many more of my clothes he could move in one trip, compared to his. We just finished changing out the hangers in his closet so he would gain extra space as well. Before I had a dresser, I was hanging my jeans on open hangers. I particularly like these because I don't have to remove the hanger to grab my pants; I can just pull them off the open end of the hanger, which made them easier for me to use. It's working so well for me, I'm using the dresser for other ''things'' instead. I've been trying to decide on jewelry storage as well. I have a system for earrings, but those darned necklaces are tripping me up! I decided I think I like this one as it's dual-purpose because of the mirror, yet locks for when I'm away. (I was looking for something that locks for security.) That said, I've even considered mounting cup hooks on a strip of wood to the back of my closet, which would make it easy to choose which one to pick with what I'm wearing. That would certainly be more cost effective, although I wouldn't actually mind having an almost full-length mirror in the bedroom. Since it's your son's closet, you might think about what's easiest for him to manage...would he do better hanging or folding his clothes? Personally, I like hanging as much as I can, as I think it's easy to access. I've noticed that ''folders'' often tend to be very neat. For those of us who find that a little harder, I think hanging storage works well. Have fun. An organized closet is a beautiful thing to behold! Keeping it that way isn't hard if you have a good system in place....See MoreUnusual Kitchen layout Input requested from those who cook!
Comments (54)I didn't put the cooktop in the island -- I don't think you have to get used to the idea. You have a choice. I have had both and really like having an island as a buffet counter, dough working area and prep space -- even a dual sided work space when DH and I are both working. I had them with young kids, but never with seating. We didn't have any safety issues, but I can see the potential and I dont think it would be comfortable or appealing to sit at the island if the cooktop is on. Your view is blocked, there will be heat and you (or your book, homework, phone, etc.) can get splattered. You could even put the cleanup sink an DW in the island and have a bar sink in the beverage/snack area but not a prep sink. I tend to like single level islands, and it seems a lot of folks who have had dual level ones change them out to a single level. You could do two levels if that suits you better. Either way, my preference would be to not have seating at the island. That appears to be a major traffic path. Do you really need it? Would it really work out well? I didn't have room to even consider seating in my kitchen, so I put 13" deep cabinets (like my wall cabinets) on the back side of my island. It has turned out to be incredible small appliance, outdoor or holiday dish storage and more. You could make the cabinets 15" and pick up just a little more in storage options (a few appliances and serving pieces could use the extra room). If you put a bench against the wall, furniture or built-in, you can extend that island and still have a good size sink and good prep space....See MoreNewEnglandgal
