Anyone else grow "County Fair" cucumber?
Comments (6)uscjusto, Yes, I grow them from seed. I used to always buy them from Park Seed, but they quit selling them. So this year I bought them from ? Jung? I think. They seemed to be more popular/available about 8-10 years ago. Now you really have to look around to find them. I think they are having trouble keeping it true to the original one. sconticut.......Do those 2 favorites of yours ever get cuc beetles? I would love to grow other varieties, but they all die from the wilt....See MoreCounty Fair time...
Comments (2)I have 3 children, . My second is entering her veggies that she grew at her JMG garden, she also did a project on Carrots . Her 4-H Art project is also entered , she did that on Mosaic (Mom's Favorite!) she entered a mosaic bowl made from broken tumbled glass. both kids did a "garden creature" and Elizabeth had an oddity carrot. We also entered a few phlox and some Art projects. (and our Rubber ducky collection) we did well mostly blue and red awards. We have been going to the fair everyday , taking care of our chickens there. having ton's of FUN ! Today were going to climb a rock wall and get our faces painted. You'all sould come down and visit the fair !! JoAnn...See MoreAny County Fair Exhibitors?
Comments (3)I'm an ex-Okie living in gardening nirvana (the Raleigh North Carolina area). As soon as I moved here I discovered that they had all sorts of gardening themed stuff going on at the state fair in Oct. Not only fruits and veggies but cut flowers and container gardens and believe it or not a gardening competition where your name gets drawn from a hat along with a garden design theme and you have all summer to tend to your plot in the corner of the fairgrounds. Lots of prize money is awarded and the gardens are huge hit with the public. Naturally I jumped in with both feet. This will be my fourth year competing. I'm now considered an ol' timer. On the surface you would think all this was vibrant and alive with interested and interesting people. It isn't. Many of the exhibits are done by the same people entering the same items over and over each year. Newbies complain but the truth is, if not enough people enter than the class will be pulled and filled with some non-gardening exhibit. So corruption is rampant and poor-sportsmanship abounds. I do it for fun so none of it bothers me. But plenty of people complain but the bottom line is that not enough people care enough to enter or participate so the few people that do kinda have to work the system to keep the game going....See MoreMecosta County Fair 2012
Comments (13)You and the young ones really did well at the fair. Bet all your entries looked super, super yummy. I'm glad you got in a rant to the fair board about the ribbons for the kids. Kids are so proud when they get a ribbon, even if its just a "participant" ribbon. I'd planned on entering several items in canning and baking classes this year, but they have their check in times which are during the time I have to be on the road to get up to my radiation treatments at the VA hospital in Indianapolis and I have no one else to drop them off for me. I probably will enter a pie or two in the pie contest because the time you enter them is late in the afternoon and I can get there then. They've always had classes in the pie contest for crisps, cobblers and tarts, but they've cut that out. Was a little disappointed in that. All new people in the Extention Office and I guess they didn't want to be bothered with them. Its a shame because they were very popular....See Morearcy_gw
