Question about growing poppies from seed
Comments (19)Only certain Poppies contain opiates, so therefore, only the opiate containing Poppies might be illegal to grow. The Poppies you buy from the garden center do not usually contain opiates, and are simply ornamental plants, which are perfectly legal. By the way, I also tried growing Poppies this year from a packet of Burpee seeds. I started them in early June/late May in the area where they were to be grown permanently, but not a one germinated, even though the Zinnia seeds planted right beside them in the same soil all came up....See MoreQuestion about growing trees from seed
Comments (7)F&F, "the dictum" is mostly true. Thing is, it's not the only facet one is typically dealing with. IOWs, while caliper will increase more and faster when all branches are retained, one is apt to end up with a too-low branching on their tree(s). So a modified approach is called for. Don't go nuts removing every branch that is lower than where you ultimately want the branching to begin. Take your time. Both you and the tree have plenty of it! As far as seed-grown stuff, I like it the best of all, hands down. And I'd add, trees generally "know" how they should grow. Like Scot said above, the openness of the site is the reason these plants are not behaving like their forest brethren. Sunlight is hitting them strongly from every angle, so they are branching out to take advantage of it. Just curb their natural impulses judiciously. +oM...See MoreQuestion about pruning and liquid coming from cut
Comments (14)Thanks folks. I'm not gonna give up just yet. Its still putting out new growth. I didn't know about the reduced watering so it had been getting some rain water. I took it out of the pot and its pretty damp. For now, since it may be a lost cause I have it sitting out of the pot to hopefully dry out faster. The other two I have are doing nothing yet. One was in the ground all winter, mulched well and the other was in a pot alongside this one with the oozing. I guess I'm impatient. This being my first time overwintering I cannot understand why one is putting out new growth and the other two (one in ground all winter and the other pot is not). Just worried I guess. I'm so so sorry to be a pest. I just want these to make it mainly because I did my best at trying to overwinter them. I'm not use to these brugs. I want to see new growth so bad, and I figured this week of warm weather we've had I would have seen something. But nothing thus far. It's confusing to a newbie when you have three and one is putting on new growth and the others not. Both that were in pots, I checked the roots they looked good. Both had new white roots on them. I guess I'll just have to wait and see....See MoreCaring for 'woody' lavender
Comments (2)I have the same problem with my lavenders, even though I do take care of them. Lots of branches die out over the winter and have to be pruned out. If you leave the remaining branches and have a hole in the middle of your plant, in a couple of seasons it will fill in. Cheryl...See Morebyuri
