Method of easily removing fall bulbs

Each year I order tulips,I think about 30% survive each year but of course I buy new ones each year too so it's hard to tell. In Massachusetts zone 6a tulips unfortunately tend to rot due to our dense clay souls and heavy rains.
I've decided I want to start lifting them after they're done flowering so I don't have to keep buying new ones. I haven't before because it's such a pain to dig up hundreds of bulbs after foliage dies, partly because I have less idea where they are and often end up cutting them with the shovel.
I had a thought to put them in the ground but perhaps in some sort of wore basket of some sort so I can just wiggle the basket out of the dirt once the foliage dies and prep the bulbs for storage. Has anyone tried this or have better methods?
