Usually posters here buy rugs that are way too small. This is one example where the rug might be just a bit too big for the space. It looks crammed against the fireplace and makes it look/feel too big for the room. Is it an 8 x 10?

IMO a rug with a bit more color and depth would add a lot to your room. Here are some examples I found searching for rugs with some sort of orange in the mix to bring in the leather on the chair. You can see how much it changes the appearance of your room.

Also it's usually best to order a small rug to check for colors first. That way if the rug doesn't work it less of a hassle to get the rug returned.

Thank you Beverly. I usually do much darker rugs. My previous rug was dark blue and had reds. Do you think the size is ok?

I think the size is a bit too large. Would prefer to see something that doesn't extend all the way to your entry door. This one is definitely a room-sized rug, as it almost completely fills the space. That's not necessarily "wrong", but personally I think a slightly smaller size would fit the proportions of your room better.

I like the 2nd one Beverly posted. It cools off the orange somewhat and the blue tones look nice with the orangish red, and its still fairly light.

Ok, you said it was a 9x12, so you should definitely go down to an 8 x 10 for that space.

I think the rug is perfect with the wall color and the pattern in the rug pulls in the furniture colors in a minimal way...but it completely changes the look of the room... so it will be a nice change from a dark rug....in order to bring it all together I would add more lighter colors?..throws and pillows...to start

To give the room even a little airier feel to go with the lighter aesthetic..if it is in the budget changing the wood tables out for metal legs ...glass tops..or lighter color wood with thinner tops and legs....would tie it all together more smoothly

I prefer the rug you have over any of the ones suggested. It brightens up the space. I’d add light colored drapes and pillows to pull the room together. Pretty rug.

I would actually switch the orientation of your sofa to where the two chairs are that way conversational area can look more cohesive by sharing the coffee table with the recliner.

I would go down to a 8x10 size for sure and change up the rug style to something more transitional...

Update: how about this rug? I tried several, even in a different size. 8 x 10 was still too short.

You only need front legs of furniture on rug...that one is too wide..and just too much red would not suggest to keep it..sorry:(

I can’t see putting a burnt orange in this room. Couches are red, I may switch to gray, and the fabric chairs are a red/ burgundy paisley. I am switching those out, they are getting too old and tired. So I do not think burnt orange will work.

The budget is open. I expect to spend up to a couple thousand or more on a rug, this one is hand knotted wool from a specialty rug store. The furniture I have looked at Macy’s and I am looking at a flex steel piece. Bryant leather sofa in a warm gray. I am not sure of the chairs and would like to add a fabric color with them. Small area so I was shopping in Columbus Ohio this weekend. Suggestions are welcome. I am adding a mantle and either stone to the fireplace or white washing the ugly brick. The mantle will be white with a dark walnut top. Accessories or a curtain panel could also be added. I do like more color on the floor than neutral due to the walls and shelves being very light.

Did I mention I love paisley and I am drawn to red. I wanted to change from the red with this rug, but I am having a lot of trouble finding something I like. I love this rug, just not sure it is right for me.

You are putting the cart ahead of the horse! Be patient and get the new furniture in the room...than you can start your rug search. if you love paisley than maybe we can help you find a paisley rug with gray and some accent colors to use for pillows and accessories.

Personally I like getting the rug first...for a couple reasons....first of all....it is hard to find a rug to love...harder if you are trying to match walls and furniture....second...a rug you love will be the guide to all your accessory colors...and third...mostly furniture pieces are neutrals with an occasional accent color chair...which can also be chosen from the colors in the rug you love...and lastly...a good quality traditional rug stays in your life forever...and all types of furniture will work with it going forward

Gray is a hard color to match so many different shades and undertones..best to wait if doing any furniture in gray...and you don’t want a rug to keep you from picking the fabrics and furniture you love.

It is not so obvious that it is gray to me?...it reads more as a neutral?...I like that the colors are also understated...so almost everything will go with it...if your taste is more understated this is a good choice for versatility...personally I lean toward more dramatic rugs ...that lend more color and excitement to a room ....like the bottom two in the group of four rolled rugs...they are also great for not showing soil

You are all over the board. It seems the rug is the most important aspect. I think you should make a decision there before even thinking about new furniture or anything else. Take the pros advice with regard to size, they’ve been doing this a longtime.

Another way to find rugs that gives you an infinite array of choices..is online sites....the most agreeable one to me is Wayfair....the only risk is that color may not be exact on arrival....the prices are much less for equal quality...and returns are pretty easy ...when I was looking for a big rug I ordered it is a very small version to see the color to save time ...they are usually useable on your home as beautiful door mats,etc. or you can return them on their dime....I usually buy hand tufted as I like finish better than hand knotted...as well they are mostly lower in price....finding the perfect rug the most challenging step in your process... but i can offer my experience of having rugs in my home that I bought 30 years ago and still love ...so it is worth the effort

Going thru all the pics I have observed something that has been sort of lost here....the actual description of an area rug implies that there will be a border of exposed flooring surrounding the “area” rug...the furniture really just overlaps the rug a little... your furniture and arrangement makes this difficult...so you seem to be leaning toward more rug than this room calls for...if you are getting
new furniture...the most attractive look is to move things toward the center of the room more...with smaller or less furniture..creating the feel of spaciousness in a sort of small room.......just food for thought at this point...

Another question is do you watch tv in this room?...and do you have to cross the room diagonally to get to the rest of the house?....aaaand have you tried the couch in front of the window?

No TV in this room. It is a sitting and reading room. We are not really TV people. I have tried the couch in front of the window and go from that configuration to this one. I may switch out an 8 x 10 rug from another room and try it out. Appreciate your input.

If you're changing out the furniture bring in the rugs but not the big red couch if that isn't going to be in the room. If you can, go to a fabric store and grab some samples of potential colours for the new furniture just to give you an idea of what rug colours would work.
