New (and first) house - need help with the living room

Hi!

Me and my fiance just bought a house and we would like to get some opinions about the living room.

The room itself it quite big, L shaped, and it's also the first thing we see once we get inside the house. I'm posting some photos of a very similar house:

The wall on the left is 8 meters long and the right one is a bit smaller: 5 meters, with 3.5 meters in between, which means there's a lot of space to use!

We also saw neighbours using 2 sofas to "separate" that area from the rest of the room, but we prefer a bigger sofa and perhaps a chair or a pouf. Other than that, we're still evaluating our possibilities and trying to figure it out what to do.

We're deffinetly expecting family meetings every once in a while, so the table on the photo will be replaced by a bigger one...and it's placed there because it's right next to the kitchen (that's where the closed door leads to).

Hi there. Congratulations on buying such a sunny, beautiful home. Love your aesthetic. I am assuming that watching tv from the dining room is not a priority, I would move your sofa to the opposite wall and place the tv on the wall to the right. I think your front door is beside your bookcase so I would move it over to create a division between your dining room and front door, creating a bit of the foyer and then fill the shelfs with vases and ornamental pieces (see examples of pictures). You may need to add some items to the top of the bookcase to increase it's height and make sure the items are oversized and beautiful on both sides so that the shelf does not look cluttered.

If you have enough room you could add a small bench to the long wall by the door to emphasize this as the entrance.

I would get another bookcase like the one you have beside your tv and book end your tv console. This would reclaim the storage lost to the decorative vases and add some symmetry to the wall with the tv (again see pictures). Add a few decorative pieces that match the bookcase in with the books to tie the two spaces together and get a rug! Oh yes a rug with the colours from your dining chairs or a complementary colour would be awesome.

And add some easy plants in baskets to tie it back to your dining room lights. I think your space is gorgeous.

Also, congrats on your first home purchase!!! If you do some searching on here you'll see that I am a big proponent of Honda mowers. After laboring for what seemed like eternity to get my first mower (hand me down snapper with a Briggs motor) started the one (very weak mind you) pull start of the Honda was something to behold. I'm sure someone will chime in saying snapper/toro/etc is better but in my opinion you just can't beat a Honda mower when it comes to the overall engineering and design.

Measure out your space to see how much usable space you will have for the furnishings. A sectional might or might not be a good option for you. As you shop gather dimensions of pieces you like then use tape and place it on the floor so you can see how it will look space wise. As mentioned above pick your focal point. Your fireplace is so nice it seems that you should work around that.

millworkman I am redoing the entire house besides the basement. that was renovated few years back. I pretty much knocking down everything on first and second floor and rebuilding. thinkdesignlive the wall itself was not structural but there where post on the ends is a beam needs to pass somewhere in that area. I can now have a post on the wall that covers the side of the fridge and have a small wall stick out on the opposite site I agree the the wall should only go until the edge if the fridge but thought to give a drop more privacy. Kristin S I took the island as a ready made model from sketchup. I will not be doing a 2 tier island and will have storage on the seating side to accommodate the pantry I have removed from first model. I do have another nice pantry we built in the basement under the stairs but of course I rather not have to go up and down all the time. As for the living room, don't pay attention how exactly I poisoned the carpet and sofa... I just downloaded a few items from sketchup library and put it to give an idea. As for tv fireplace. Im planing on a ventless fireplace that are relatively narrow in hight. and want tv on top on an accent wall. I like that look. See attached image from Pinterest
