Furniture Design Dilemma living room

New vacation home-great room/living room ideas needed!

Hello! it's been a while since I've been on- but loved the advice the last time I posted -so here I am again! We recently purchased a new vacation home in the country-there's a lake nearby and skiing in winter, so perhaps our decor should reflect this in some way. The first and toughest dilemma I have is how to position the furniture in our/living-great room w/ fireplace. There is a kitchen island that is very near the space and the only place to put the tv is in the corner near the window-bc it is wired that way! Thinking of a sectional around the fireplace w coffee table facing the towers the corner, yet encompassing the fireplace area? not sure-need suggestions, plus any ideas for a room like this. I am attaching some pics of the area in question. Don't mind the people in some of the pics-just needed to use the best ones that show the space-t

I see a leather sectional sofa. It would be a durable, comfortable option for lots of cozy weekends by the fire.

yes thanks! but my real dilemma is how to position it-and maybe even add a chair as I can only really put the TV in the corner by the window-perhaps on a low console etc. should it be a right arm or left arm sectional etc. thanks so much for your thoughts again :)

The window over the fireplace--how high off the floor is it? I'm wondering if you could change out the fireplace to a lower-profile unit and move it to be under one of the other windows. (No idea how expensive that would be.) Then you might be able to put the TV where the fireplace currently is. Placed on a TV stand, it might block the lower part of the window. If that bothers you, you could look into a TV stand that hides the TV and raises it to viewing height at the touch of a button. Or a wall mount that would let you raise and lower the TV--up when you are watching it and lower when you aren't. That would also allow you to adjust the viewing angle, if you wanted to watch it from the kitchen.

Maybe you aren't as creative as you would like to be, but you probably know what you like and what you don't like. So that's why you should get a bunch of magazines and on-line pictures to start seeing what speaks to you and what doesn't. We now know that you don't want orange. What other colors don't you want/what colors do you love? Do you have a Calico Corners or JoAnn's nearby? Try browsing the fabrics and figure out what and colors and patterns you like: stripes/plaids/polkadots/floral? This is where you can start, and then we can work from there.

I agree, there is not much to be said without more pictures, but looking at what we have, and not knowing the size of your starbust mirrors, I think you could hang them to the right of the TV to fill up approximately the shape I've indicated below. Second point, look for a striking rug that has a similarly natural, organic feel. It could continue your neutrals theme or introduce colour, but I'd definitely go for some kind of organic pattern -- not a geomatric design. I would forget the shelves by the fireplace. That TV is too high and could have gone on the left wall with a nice cabinet beneath with maybe some display and the sofa facing the TV and sitting on the rug so that you can access the door. Decor items and art are things you need to shop for. The art in the DR is hung too high , hang some art on the entry wall with a coat tree in the corner for guests and a shallow shelf under the art.

Another perspective of the space where TV is going and photo at door looking back towards the kitchen and measurements of the space would be helpful. Pretty floors and FP. Is the vacation home for a family or rental? Are you going to be watching TV most of the time or entertaining around the fireplace. Are you set on a sectional?

Measure out your space to see how much usable space you will have for the furnishings. A sectional might or might not be a good option for you. As you shop gather dimensions of pieces you like then use tape and place it on the floor so you can see how it will look space wise. As mentioned above pick your focal point. Your fireplace is so nice it seems that you should work around that.

Is the island pictured at the bottom of the last picture? You're thinking the sofa will go between the window and door in the first pic? Can you post additional pics or measurements of the space?
