Your seedling is very pretty as are the other blooms. Carnival In Brazil looks very close to how it blooms here with a bit more bright red here. i do notice that it tends to fade a bit by the end of the day after being in full sun all day. I typically take all my pics early in the morning anytime between 7:00am and 8:30am. My gardens get full sun all day so the light is better for me in the early morning. What I see is what my camera captures.

Arctic Lace has not thrived here, so you are fortunate in getting so many blooms. It looks as though the cloudy setting is underexposed. You could correct the exposure in picture editing. Since you are familiar with your old camera, why not buy another by that company? I remember you also complained about color distortions in previous years. As I recall, you have a lot of shade.

Thanks Julia! I tend to forget from year to year, I should look for my pics when I used to take them early too, maybe Carnival in Brazil does look that red. Mine fade with morning sun by 11am sometimes even earlier.

Thanks Mantis! Arctic Lace was suggested by a northern grower, of course it's not as huge as northern plants but it survives and it rebloomed last year too (I looked at pics). Exactly, cloudy setting look underexposed, if I increase exposure even a little they look worse. Auto is a complete crap. Plus figuring out different settings for each and every bloom is a lot of work :) That's the point of point and shoot for me, just point.. and shoot.

Well, a lot of cameras can't handle purples for example, I had some problems with some of them and a couple oranges, but it's just a few flowers to make adjustments for. Yeah, a lot of shade from a huge tree and two that are getting bigger. But my flowers seem to do better with afternoon sun than morning sun (I have a few places with morning sun).

The seedling has beautiful colors! Born to Reign looks pretty true to the color I get on it. Arctic Lace does look better with your old camera. What kind of camera is your new one? And if your old one still takes pictures, why did you get a new one?

Thanks, Debra! I really liked how the seedling looked yesterday! It's Chance Encounter x Undercurrent btw, and of course lighter. Yes, Born to Reign pic was one of the good ones, although I like to take close up photos and this camera doesn't focus well. It's one of the cheaper Sony Cybershots, apparently they stopped making these series in 2014, concentrating on their more expensive options. But I figured if it's still being sold and the reviews were good, I'd give it a try. Apparently not a lot of people take pictures of flowers :))

My old one is a point and shoot Olympus that is like 15 years old, it freezes up a lot, the memory card is obsolete and if I want to take more than 10 pics (and I love taking pics of my flowers, even if it's just for me to look at, one of the highlights of growing daylilies for me) I need to constantly empty it, and I'm afraid one day it just won't turn on *dreads* So that's why I was looking for something newer, but within a reasonable price. I can't afford 400 and higher ones.. Oh we had to upgrade cellphone this year, and got one of the newest, and it takes horrible pics (of flowers), but other than that pretty good.

B&H has lots of cameras, including reconditioned ones. I go for the reconditioned as I can get more for the money.. I have bought 2 Panasonics in a row and couldn't be more pleased. B&H is reliable, good service, etc. I paid under one hundred for the first one and about 135 for the second. DMC -ZS20. The ZS70 looks like mine. It is a point and shoot with lots of settings and a really good zoom.

My daughter, who is excellent with a camera, prefers Canon.

Arctic Lace is so pretty. Born to Reign has great color! And your seedling also has good color. I am sorry you are having camera issues. When mine died several years ago I never replaced it, opting to use my phone instead-realizing limitations but willing to live with them. I am surprised your newer phones do not take good pictures of flowers as that (competitive camera function) is one of the major research selling components of the newer phones. I read Nikki Schmith’s blog about using her phone camera (April 2019) and certainly feel better about using mine. I think some colors are hard to capture and I do try to note when colors are not true as most people do. I love having the portrait option on my phone. Since taking flower pics would be all I would be doing with a camera, I could not justify paying big bucks for a new camera! I hope you find a resolution (no pun intended!!) to your problem-you have lots of pretties to photograph.

Nat - they are all lovely flowers, regardless of the colors not being quite true. In each case, however - as Mantis said - you could probably correct the exposure on these photos with a photoshop program; lightening the images would give you closer to true, I think. For the record, though, I use a Nikon DSLR 3300 - best camera I've ever owned. My favorite camera shop closed when the owner retired - will have to remember Brad's website for reconditioned cameras, as I someday may want another Nikon like this one.

Brad, thanks! I am familiar with B&H but never knew they had a Used department. Wonder if used could be returned (that's why I was looking at b&m so I could return easy, plus their new prices are the same as Best Buy, of course B&H has more selection. I will check those out thanks, that was a great price for a panasonic.

Kate, do you have an iPhone too? I was able to find that blog post by Nikki S. and she uses an iPhone (the one DH got is a Samsung). I've heard iPhones have great cameras! Interesting that she mentions loving a Sony P&S camera before figuring out that phone takes great pics. I couldn't find any daylily I personally know to compare, but I guess she likes how the pics turn out. I should try a portrait mode on the new phone. It's not mine I am fine with my flip phone lol but I can borrow it once in a while.

All Ones are true to color, and I had to laugh at the phone pic of the last one especially. It's like looking thru those brown sun glasses which I actually love and recommend, but they make everything so extra vivid ))

Well, on the last set, #2 is probably closer to reality. Number 1 has a bluing effect. The cell phone one is what one fears from cell phones.

On set 2, the first one is probably the best; but the pictures aren't all taken at the same distance. And #s 2 and 3 may be closer to reality.

On the first set, the second picture looks a bit overexposed, but you can reduce the exposure a bit in Photoshop. The last picture may show more detail, but it is more close up. It looks as though your new camera is overexposing a bit. You are waiting till the green light shows, are you not? I read that is the source of some picture-taking problems in the less expensive Sonys.

I suppose that cell phone cameras are one reason why some inexpensive camera lines are being dropped. I actually prefer the non-portrait mode because I find the fuzzy leaves distracting; but the flowers do look the same. And the cultivar is?

I am sure that is true, Mantis. The camera aspect of the cell phone is one big part of the competition among cell phones from what I have read. And personal preference I suppose because I don’t even notice the fuzzy leaves!! This cultivar is a noid. With the phone I have an app that will size my photos and another app to tag them with names. So I can take my pics, step into the shade (!), resize them and tag them if I want, and save to an album. I can later load them into my computer all done. It just works for me and my gardening style but obviously not for others. Portrait is not effective on long shots or clump shots as you lose some of the lilies. Example: Vanishing Mist-color was spot on-but so were the weeds en masse behind this lily. Weeds I did not want to distract from this gorgeous lily. Portrait allowed me to blur them out.

Brutus-too far away for portrait and too many lilies. I would have blurred some. However, except for not deadheading before photographing, I am happy with this pic for my personal files.

Irfanview is one of the simplest photo viewers to use and resize photos. [though it can do a whole lot more that you may not care about] Some others on here use it. I can resize a picture in about 15 seconds; there is no loss of quality. I could even easily walk you through your first time. Just download the program and plug ins and install. If you have windows 10, use the 64 bit.

Mantis, you are right! On the last set the first has a wrong color of the eye, not as purple of course, so the cell phone got it right, it's just not as bright, and more pink like my old camera captured. None of this added warmness, yellowness.

My Yoke is Easy No.1 is right. I should have chosen something else to compare though. Yeah cell phone pics are crisp and detailed, i just do not understand this need for vividness and enhanced colors. My flowers as pale as they are are beautiful to me. I did read in one review that f/ something matters, but not sure what it is and how to change.

The camera was overexposing and underexposing, too difficult to get a nice pic. It shouldn't be like this. Yes of course I was waiting for the green light.

Kate, thanks! She is our senior kitty and she sleeps a lot. Your phone takes very nice pictures! They look very natural to me. Oh even a quick resizing and tagging that's nice. How interesting that your brother said so.

I actually played with a portrait mode on the phone, I like the background blurred but it makes the file size significantly bigger, like from 2MB to 10. Still couldn't get a natural color ))

I resize in Win10 Photos app. I just need to go one by one, and after the latest unexpected and unavoidable Windows update our laptop got so slow, so that's why it takes forever, Other than that it resizes them to a pretty good size.

I never have to resize my pictures. With the old Garden Web, I had to store pictures and resize on Picassa. Then came Houzz, and one good thing was that one could just drop the pictures in the Photo icon (from I Photo). So much easier. Then, alas, some techies decided they could improve Houzz to fit some business model. And now we have Houzz II with all its posting quirks. But I still don't have resize.
