How do you choose paint colors before lights are in?
Comments (1)Do you have some lamps you can drag to your new construction that will give you similar light quality to what you will end up with? Your post reveals that you understand the control that light has over the final effect..it's everything! My other thought is that you might discuss this problem with your contractor, and see if he/she will compound and prime the drywall, but hold off the final painting until after the lighting is in place? It's not unusual at all to do it that way, particularly since, if you hate the color's final effect, you'll have wasted the time and money, and either have to do it over, or live with a lovely new house that isn't right....See MoreMoving into new home. Comments (19)I think I would also be like you and need to paint while the house is empty. I think the suggestions above are good ones. Also look at Revere Pewter, a Ben. Moore color that is very popular. It's a warm grey and you can do a search and find it here. Also, a neighbor of mine just painted her living room and hall a color called Dune Drift in the Seaside Collection by Valspar paint, sold at Lowes. It's a very calming color that is a neutral greyed green. A great Ben. Moore color that a few friends used and I love (and wish I used it in hindsight) is called Bamboo Shoot #1529. The other colors on the same strip as this that are deeper in color are also beautiful (Ocean Pebbles). My daughter just painted her bedroom BM Coventry Grey,a beautiful grey (cooler grey with a trace of blue). She says she feels like she is living in Nantucket. Beautiful with white molding. I have seen photos of most of these colors on this site. I don't like how the colors show on My Perfect Color, so don't check them out there. Sorry, I don't know any specific colors by Behr, but they will match anything because the color formulas are in their computer....See MorePaint before hardwood floors are installed or after- paint color?
Comments (12)Thank you graywings and redbazel for your input. I just wish I could install the floors first and wait a month before painting but then it would be so difficult to move them again since they must be emptied and I don't want my floors scratched. I want a happy color on the wall that is very neutral and will not compete with my new floors and will also be easy to work in that is not so white as the Linen White. I will go get a deck of Aura Paint chips and see what is similar to Bone White but maybe nicer? I would like to try a paint that does not outgas for as long as the BM Pearl Finish Paint that I used. BM Bone White in my family room is warm and everyone loves the color but I have a lot of light in that room. I wonder if it would look nice in the office. I learned that even trying samples on the wall or sample boards does not tell the whole story until the paint is on the wall and the furniture is back in the room. I wish the painter would have painted behind all the cabinets and did a good job since then I would just leave things alone for a year but I think now is the time to paint since the cabinets are heavy and I do not want to scratch my floors by waiting at a later time. The only problem is then I will have to allow several days after the paint job to install the wood so the room can be acclimated with less moisture from the latex paint....See MoreNeed Help Choosing Flooring and Paint for New House
Comments (4)That's a fantastic looking home! Congrats. It looks like the parquet is the 'thin' stuff which means it probably can't handle a refinish (it might....but don't count on it). The previous owners did a nice job 'matching' the tones for the living room wood-tile and the beams. That's the type of match that looks quite nice. That being said, you definitely have plenty of flooring going on. You are correct, the gray walls (trying to be trendy without doing the updates needed to complete the look) are not helping. Here's the issue I see: the COST! If you have the budget for $2/sf removal of the existing tiles and then have the budget to install LARGE FORMAT 'wood look' tiles throughout (should be $15-$18/sf for materials + labour) then go for it. If you do the math, you could be looking at $17-$20/sf. If we *assume you ONLY have 1000sf of flooring (I'm guessing the floors would be more like 2000sf) you are looking at $20K. If we price it more to the 2000sf then you have a price tag getting close to $40K. And we haven't even touched the parquet or the brick. I like the brick. But it does break up the house even more. And I always worry that an 'outdoor space turned indoor space' like this one hasn't been done 'properly'. And that could be another money-pit waiting to happen. Ask yourself the question: Do I have the BUDGET for $20/sf for flooring? And another $5K for painting?...See Morecatbuilder
