Cabinets with the most durable painted or tinted varnish finish?
Comments (5)Any good quality mid grade and up FACTORY finish will be extremely durable. If cared for properly, you should have years of service from your cabinets. Cared for properly means dry dusting and slight damp wiping. It means no point impacts that break the skin of the coated surface. Abuse is not covered by any cabinet company. Painted finishes because of their nature will always show normal wear and tear more than wood. Having a quality factory finish does not mean that they will not show normal wear and tear of scrapes, scratches, chips, etc. All cabinets will show normal wear over the years. Painted finishes will just show it more....See MoreConversion Varnish on a kitchen table top
Comments (2)It’s not going to yellow. But a white kitchen table will show every single mark of normal wear and tear. You miss the coaster just one and drag the coffee cup across the table, that fired ceramic will leave a faint scratch. Hit the edge with enough force, and that will give you a chip. Plain paint will be easier to touch up. Life happens. And life will show. It will show less on wood....See MoreIs conversion varnish worth the extra buck?
Comments (10)@ProSource, you got it right. The first guy is charging $8k extra upgrading from pre-cat lacquer to conversion varnish. These are his worlds from the email he sent me “We offer acrylic modified urethane, pre-cats, and polyurethane. But I like conversion varnish personally. Good value and doesn’t yellow.” His price for the cabinets with pre-cat lacquer is $38k and $46k upgrading to conversion varnish. The second guy is not worth talking about as he only makes the cabinets and does not offer painting. But he did offer his opinion on conversion varnish. His words were “I prefer pre-cat lacquer over conversion varnish due to varnish looking too thick.” The third guy does ONLY Renner water based polyurethane. He said “it’s far superior to anything for painted cabinets” and that’s all he chooses to work with. His total for the cabinets is $30k....See MoreWould you use conversion varnish on custom cabinets?
Comments (6)I'm not sure, Nancy, as our cabinets are custom and went through conversion varnish process. Or well, some complicated process. Special booth etc. What I did find out though now when researching, that there are different varnishes, and not all of them are available in CA,due to very stringent CA rules: "A low formaldehyde version of conversion varnish is not available for sale in California because it does not meet the state’s volatile organic compound (VOC) standards. Keep in mind that formaldehyde is a VOC and once the finish of regular Conversion Varnish is fully cured before home delivery, there will be no VOC or formaldehyde breathable by the homeowner." found on the website of a CA-based designer-builder-there is a chapter on cabinets there that goes into expanations and details on different finishes, so it's an informative and interesting read. He does prefer conversion varnish to all the other paint finishes, (as also our cabinetmaker did) but is an opionated guy in how he writes ..)) Here: http://www.dndb.info/cabinets/ Would be great if pros in the field chimed in. I do suspect though that paints etc here lack certain ingredients..they remind me of my gluten-free food, like something is missing:) I wonder whether it's just my feeling. But then we don't know where the OP lives, so might not be relevant. There are several threads on Houzz as well that discuss subject, as far as I understood-I saw them when started googling-but I didn't get to reading them yet....See MoreJora
