line-drying laundry saved me fifty bucks last month!
Comments (39)I've been considering line-drying (certain) clothes for some time now. I thought I wanted to buy a clothes-line, but then after some consideration, decided to just use some cording or rope, or even 'bungee-cords' if possible, to hang stuff on outside. I don't have it figured out yet - but I'm SURE we have something around here we can rig up...lol. I have read all the posts here, & noticed the 'couple pennys savings' in energy costs some mentioned. Well, every penny counts...but what I'm looking for is not only the few cents savings, but the *Wear & Tare* - (aka *mileage* - so to speak) - on my dryer also! I grew up with washer & hanging clothes out to dry, & I absolutely hated it! "Hanging" wasn't so bad...it was the folding & ironing that came later that I dreaded - for a family of 9! LOL! But now that "I" have 'control' (haha)... Those stiff clothes...UGH! But I have plenty that can be hung out to dry. OH, and before even reading these posts...told family I want a clothes-line that is "IN NEIGHBORS' FACE" - complete with lots of undies! LOL! Last week, I noticed my neighbor has a clothes-line...but under the shade of the backyard patio, & only a couple little towels on it over a few days. (Not that I'm nosey...we've been doing yard work & 'they've' been rebuilding their patio) I also 'caught' another neighbor arranging her backyard patio chairs & draping some bedding on them to dry or air out. (She also kept it close to house - under back patio!) I find it comical that neighbors want to sorta 'hide' it. I want a full-blown clothes-line like we had in the 60's - right smack in middle of yard! Panties, bras & all! LOL Well, we're in desert on about 1/2 acre, and only chain-link fence btwn neighbors. The DUST factor concerns me some. And the tons of birds. But the biggie is those strong winds that come out of nowhere. I certainly don't want to see my undies draped on someone's chimney - a mile or two down the road! haha... ANYWAY...Like I said, the 'mileage' on the dryer...that's worth saving, for certain....See MoreAre Schlage doorknobs worth the extra money?
Comments (22)The large levers are easier to use if one has arthritis or mobility issues. If one intends to age in place a large lever is preferable to a round knob. As an added bonus...with a lever one can open the door with an elbow if one's arms are full of groceries! Try doing THAT with a round knob! Dead bolts are good, but it a thief is truly determined to get in he or she will. We have schlage deadbolts, knobs, and a lever on the front door that we purchased from a locksmith. I am very pleased with the quality....See MoreASME heater worth it?
Comments (6)The bottom line is ALL pool equipment has a shorter lifespan that it did 30 years ago. Bronze pumps last 30 years, Stainless steel filters never cracked or had to deal with a "leaking bulkhead" and a lot of those old heaters still running are old RAYPAK, LAARS and PUREX with cast iron or bronze headers. Salt systems and the cost of steel did away with the Stainless filter to a point where the most popular, will no longer be produced as of this year after what, 50 years or so? The need for lighter and smaller heaters and emission standards forced out the metal headers. More water flow required more technology and plastic pumps. The result is less lifespan. A Raypak ASME may not be needed but it will last much longer than any plastic header heater which I guarantee you won't last 10 years. The Raypak has maintained the same general design for all of these years and others have changed constantly which makes more stuff obsolete and much faster. Keep good chemistry and this heater will last longer than you own the house and right now, it's $200 bucks more than the leading Pentair brand. It costs nothing more to install so don't be sold a bill of godds on that simply because you are buying a more expensive heater. Buy it from a local tech, not an online supplier....See MoreIs it worth it to go over budget on a remodel?
Comments (47)Cienza--I am doing the exact same thing! I think about the kitchen 24/7. But I say embrace it! How many things do we get to look forward to with childlike excitement as we get older? I was thinking about that today...there aren't always things to look forward to, so why not enjoy this time and visit the granite and all that? :) Elba--I cannot believe that! We must be on the same wavelength, but just missed each other! Isn't MP the best? They are so great to work with and have such an awesome selection. Yes, I am getting the Rohl Country pullout too. :) We decided on a Julien SS 30 x 16 x 8 sink. I brought it home last night--it's HUGE! What are you getting? I can't believe that this is actually all of my stuff sitting here in the living room with me...it's like a dream. We got Colonial Brass hardware from them as well--great prices. Will definitely ask Kathleen to show me your slabs; I've never even heard of quartzite before! And soapstone...I'm jealous. It's so beautiful. :) Enjoy that light for your sink--it's the first step to all the great new stuff that will be in your home before you know it. :) Tomorrow we empty out all the cabs and DH starts the painting process. I also lose all countertops and my kitchen sink tomorrow for a whole week...wish me luck!...See MoreAngelina Thomas
