It is a type of hardy sedum, Hylotelephium spectabile, like Autumn Joy. But there are scads of different cultivars on the market with various foliage and flower colors. They are all tough, adaptable and durable plants and make great garden accents. Most tend to bloom late summer and well into fall. And they can be easily divided. ETA: just noticed this was posted in Gardening for Shade. Hardy sedums are best in as much sun as available and upright ones - like in the photo - will have less of a tendency to flop or splay if grown in as much sun as possible.

It looks like a heath or heather, but I'm not sure which variety.

OK - I think the second one may be a Wheeler's pittosporum, as Jinx so aptly suggests. It's weird, because the leaves on top are all brown and very obviously dead, but there are still green leaves on the "under canopy" (for lack of a better term). I swear, if they died, I may just replace them with yaupons. I know they've gained a reputation for being a bit of a bore, but they're the only thing that consistently looks fabulous - still, even after Snowvid - in my area. Thank you all so much! What you are describing sounds like a different species of Kalanchoe. Hopefully your cute plant will bloom in the next year or so. Then you'll know for sure (or somebody should recognize) what you have if it doesn't the seem to match the suggested ID. If you are in the N hemisphere, blooms should start forming around the end of the year and through the spring if the light is strong enough (assuming it is K. blossfeldiana).
