Help with kitchen update
Comments (16)Thanks everyone for the responses! So happy to have a color expert in this thread because whew!! Who knew picking the right shade of grey could be this complicated lol. Yes I will be painting the adjacent living room the same shade of grey. However, I’m not painting the stairway area that leads to the living room so I need a gray that transitions well into that current color (see more pics below). Any ideas? I’ve been looking at SW Repose gray and BM revere pewter. Not quite sure what will go with my floors. What do you guys think? Ps - these are pics from the listing so ignore all the furniture....See MoreHelp with kitchen -- update track lighting or change completely?
Comments (4)You can probably just buy new LED lights for your existing track. I has the large cans and found three small modern looking heads with colored glass lenses at ReStore for $1 each and just bought LED bulbs at IKEA to replace the halogen lights. You will need to remove one of the existing heads to check the type of track, some has 2 conductors and some have 3, some are line voltage and others are low voltage. The lights usually push against the rail and twist out or might have a pull down spring loaded connection. They might be a little stiff but shouldn't be too tough to remove so keep trying until it pulls out without needing too much force. I have known people to just pull and end up breaking the little tabs on the connection to the track...See MoreHelp with kitchen update!
Comments (23)The kitchen looks appropriate to the style of the house. Trying to add trendy gray or go more trendy modern, would be a bad idea. I would replace all the counters with something like Taj Mahal quartzite to lighten things up and then do an interesting backsplash with a nod to the style of the house. I have a Spanish style house with dark wood cabinets, TM counters and I used this arabesque tile from Encore but in a tone-on-tone colorway, so it has the look of one color from the distance. OR, if you really dislike the kitchen, do nothing for now and rip the whole thing out when you have the budget and time for the project. I waited 8 years to do mine, which then justified getting rid of the appliances too, which allowed me to change the layout....See Morehelp! kitchen update needed
Comments (1)The community would need a lot more information from you to help much. Budget, extend of upgrades, a layout of the room and surrounding areas with measurements, those are the types of things that would be helpful. It looks like you have a tight space, so semi-custom cabinetry might not work if you wanted to replace cabinetry, and you might be limited to custom to get the sizes you needed to fit back into the space. One suggestion often given for kitchens with soffits is to remove the soffit and take new cabinets up to the ceiling. I personally wouldn't really recommend painting your existing cabinetry, but it does look like a strong case for something we'd call "refacing," where you order new doors and drawer fronts to provide a fresher look. Then the box frames are finished to match. New flooring and new lighting would probably also be up for discussion here....See MoreKimberly Shackelford
