What a difference the growing environment can make

Not a question, just an observation.

Years ago I was very familiar with a plant that was often to be seen growing out of cracks in the Devon sea cliffs, samphire.

This is typical of what they looked like. This was taken at Durdle Door in Dorset

A couple of days ago, in the Scilly Isles, and today at the Lizard Point, I found this plant growing at the top of sea cliffs.

Unless I am totally mistaken, they are both examples of Rock Samphire (Crithmum maritimum).

ps: the hosta dude .... eric smith took the large blue elegans... freakishly flowering out of normal season.. and crossed it onto a later blooming small hosta.. to create a line of small blue hosta ... [this was state of the art breeding in early 1060s] ....his name included dorset.. samphire... and devon ... and now i suspect i know what area he lived in ... learn something new every day ... so i may as well go to bed.. but it is only 4 in the afternoon .. lol ..

yea, it is great to watch modification in progress,

sometimes I manage to snap some pics,

like a 2 inches high Sedum or the overfed specimen of Sedum, taller than a foot, in some garden,

almost knee-high dandelion, often to be found at garden shows, where they go wild with the ferts in order to jumpstart everything...

Ottawan, It sounds like too much nutrition. If you are using natural or manufactured fertilizer, cut back until you see the results that you want. I've also seen that type of growth in plants grown inside. The benefits (if it's any consolation) would be a larger root system in a shorter period of time; and more wood for cuttings (though it will be green for a long time).

I live in Vermont where we like to say "We were green before green was cool". We use renewable resources. And I know a lot of people won't like our choice, but we burn wood. We have the largest per capita use of woodstoves than any other state. And our air is the cleanest in the northeast. I use a woodstove as my main heat source. The stove is certified by the EPA and burns clean. Our local school district just built a new middle school and it uses a wood fired furnace. Now I'm not talking about someone throwing logs in a pot belly stove, but a modern furnace that uses wood chips left over from the logging operations and sawmills. A number of Vermonters are "off the grid" and have solar panels and woodstoves. But eating toast is a special event. Riding a bicycle to work when it's 20 below isn't an option so we do drive cars too. And unless it's a 4x4 we stay home 5 months a year. So a Prius isn't practical unless you live in a subdivision. A garden is mandatory. So we compost. That's self explanatory. You see, a lot of "greenies" talk the talk, but won't actually do the nasty stuff. Like chopping wood, or composting or even gardening. They talk about insulation, electric cars, etc. We call that window dressing. You want to be "green"? Think about what you would do if the power went out for 2 weeks during winter. And live that lifestyle.

Is 'interesting' good, Cohetele? (You don't have to answer) ;-) Thanks for all the encouragement and good wishes for the kitchen and for sleep. DH went straight to bed with a fever and sick stomach that the kids have been sharing, so I think I'll go to bed early, tonight, too. For once it'll be early today, not early tomorrow morning! Oldest DS is working away for us, though, so some progress is still being made. But he's not crazy like us and makes sure he gets plenty of sleep so he can get up for work. Glad to have helped inspire you to find your perfect colors, hockeychik. I can't wait to see what you come up with. Any real contenders so far? The one that wouldn't let loose of me was the burgundy...and the light, creamy gray kept nagging at me til I could ignore it no longer! It does seem like a lot of colors, I know, but I hope it ends up kind of understated and elegant, not 'colorful'. DH is my cabinetmaker, vicnsb. So, yes, custom! :-)

What time of year did you take the pictures thefof? The Scilly plant is in full summer growth and flower. The Dorset example looks like an old plant in the off season. But it's true the habitat does make a difference to growth and appearance. The Scillies really are a strange world aren't they? They feel like Britain but not Britain. Did you go to Tresco?

The one taken at Durdle Door was taken in April, the other, was on Sunday.

He he. You can certainly say that for the Scillies. One of the many 'un-British' things, is that the commonest trees on the islands seem to be Metrosideros excelsa (New Zealand pohutukawa)

Yes, Tresco, was the reason I went.
