What environments make difference in two type of growth patterns?

I have seen plants and pictures of fig plants with two types of growth and wonder what makes it so.

I have seen plants (like mine) with fast growth, big leaves, long inter-node distances (distant leaves) and fat green stems/branch-wood, and also (2nd type) of plants growth pattern with small healthy leaves, shorter inter-node distances with brownish but not so fat stems.

I prefer the 2nd type growth pattern because I feel they fruit often but my plant growth is like the first type (above). Could it be the cold climate or just due to lavishing the plants with nutrition? What is required to change the growth pattern to the second type?

What could be the benefits for the first type growth pattern (for consolation)? Will the first type of growth pattern change over time?
