What's attacking my Hibiscus?

I've got a heavily planted garden with dozens of different shrubs and perennials. And at the front door, I carved out of the lawn two beds for some colorful interest. Everything is perennial, but I thought I'd embed a pot of hibiscus to last a year at a time. They are sensational, but lately something has been cutting the stems. The cut is diagonal and fairly clean, as if done by pruners, and the cut stems are lying there on the ground. I've got rabbits and squirrels (no deer) and nothing else in my yard is harmed. Any ideas? PS, my wife beats you to the idea that it's a jealous neighbor.
