Is there a better white rose than Pope John Paul II ?
Comments (41)Ric-VA-commenting on an older post. I have both and maybe JFK/Pascali(lost the nametag, so don't know if it's jfk/pascali) . PJPII fragrance is not as strong as sugar moon, but it's so Amazing in it's own way and so is the flower form and shape. Planted near the front door and I can smell it every time. Got this one from a nursery and it was already a lush looking plant-probably bare root planted maybe from Weeks. Sugar Moon, got own root fro RUnlimited in 2017, this year the small plant is valiantly putting out new branches and blooming non stop- It is never without a bloom(love it so far), came through our bad winter without any diebacks-there was no winter protection. SM has an amazing strong fragrance and so is the flower- it blooms slowly and the slow progression of the bloom lasts atleast a week, and then suddenly it goes from looking like an HT rose to a peony. I love both and they are special in their own way and worth buying. JFK / Pascali great looking HT flower, very slight fragrance(hard to tell, we had non stop rain), lots of new canes. Need to watch for black spot...My recommendation is ofcourse-Buy both of them. In the white category-I also have Bolero(too small, have not bloomed yet), Iceberg(bareroot, 1st year, loaded with buds but has not yet bloomed), LilyPons(cute with pointy petals, can't detect any fragrance, flowers which started of small are are getting bigger), rugosa alba-intensely pure rose fragrance(can smell it across the yard-suburban), miniature white rose from walmart- unknown but a bloom machine....See MoreHow similar are Bolero & Win. Cathedral?
Comments (3)I have 'Bolero', as well as 'Mary Rose' and 'Redoute', which are the color varients of 'Winchester Cathedral'. The plants 'Mary Rose' and 'Redoute' are each about four times the size of 'Bolero' The foliage is matte vs. the glossy foliage of 'Bolero'. Disease resistance is about the same: somewhat better than average. BS is not much of a problem here, though. The flower form of 'Bolero' is a slightly shorter, more open cup, in contrast to a more rounded cup shape. There are slight pink touches in overcast weather, pure white otherwise. The repeat of 'Bolero' is much quicker and the fragrance is stronger. The flowers last an extra day or so. 'Winchester Cathedral' is listed on Austin's site as being one of the more cold-hardy varieties. Cold hardiness here is not a factor, so I can't comment....See MoreBest White in Rain?. . .
Comments (12)The answer to your post's title question is 'Tineke'. Since you've ruled-out that one because of its lack of fragrance, you might want to consider 'Secret's Out!', white sport of the very fragrant 'Secret'. 'Secret' is at it's very best in milder zones like yours, so I would expect the same of 'Secret's Out!'. Maybe someone else here can comment on how either of those two react to rain. A brand new white that looks terrific (in photos) and is said to be highly fragrant is 'Sugar Moon'. It's a 2012 introduction, but is available now on a limited basis. We can only hope that it'll be another of the very rare whites that do well in the rain. Here is a link that might be useful: 'Sugar Moon' @ S&W Greenhouse...See MoreNeed 4 White Roses
Comments (21)I plan to "punctuate" the white roses with the other colors. Was thinking several different kinds - like low Green Ice, then a HT like Pope J. Paul II, Bolero sounds like a definite......perhaps Ducher/Marie Pavie......dont want huge roses that will get too large..... I looked on Regan Nursery's site and they have lots of white roses. I enjoy ordering from Regans - I have heard good things about Gormet Popcorn......if anyone takes a look.....there are lots of choices. Iceberg and Pillowfight are nixed.....PJP II and Bolero are definites....think I could include Green Ice as a low grower......then still have several more white choices. Was thinking of trying Claire Austin, a new white. Getting ready to do my D. Austin order to pick up in Tyler in late January and unless I hear something negative, want to try that. Glamis Castle might be one to try [since I am going to Chamblees!] If anyone takes a look at Regans whites ........let me know what you think!
