Quick sun patient question

I’m not getting any responses from some other sub categories and I know Morp plants a lot of annuals so here I go. I’m thinking ( pic to follow) this is some type of disease. I sprayed Serenade a few times. I figured it might have been caused by all the wet weather we were have in NJ.

New blooms have come and gone, but the problem stays the same. Just got out of a heat wave and more of the same on the way. Here’s a pic, they are in a window box. I water when the soil dries which is usually every other day and use miracle gro once a week.

I do impatiens, but not specifically SunPatiens. :-) And fewer to none of those lately given the wet and hot summers we've had; they die of a variety of nasty fungal diseases!

That does look fungal. I'd be tempted to graduate from Serenade and give something like Daconil a shot. It does look like the Serenade is holding it at bay, though, so if you do want to continue with it, I also don't object to continuing on. However, the SunPatiens in question are unlikely to be big producers of blooms either way.

And I'd recommend against repeating the SunPatiens Experience in that location next year, you're going to have the same issue.

Otherwise, your care is fine. Generally, feed on a normal schedule. Don't let them get dry (and this year, they haven't really gone dry). But if they get dry, they get wilty, and that'll let you know they went dry and you water them.

And just to make me happy, check for slugs. That's not the problem (slugs don't cause mottled flowers or dying tips of leaves), but they might be a minor secondary problem that are holding your plants back a little where the damage is more internal to the plant and not obvious from the photo.

Ok thanks Morph. I have some Azoxystrobin 22.9 % on hand could I use that? If so I wonder how much I should use and how often?

The best solution I've caught for that, is to clear the space you're planting on/in, plant, and cover the seedling/immature baby plant with a cup or a bowl, then replace the mulch. When you remove the cover, the mulch stays close where it's useful, but not so close that it's harmful, or hiding the new babies. I'm not as certain for any direct-sown seeds. I would likely leave it mulch-free, for as long as possible, then take the most viable seedlings or groups and try the cup or bowl approach again. If you *must* use some kind of mulching material over them, I would want to go with something light, loose, and very fine, in a VERY thin layer. Bugs like mulch, in my gardens. :'( Your mileage, as always, may vary. As for covering mulch - true, it's best not to cover woody mulch in a garden space. The wood portions will attempt to rot more quickly, so you'll lose any 'mulching' benefit to them. Weeds will just sprout in the new dirt on top anyways, so they're made more useless. And as they rot and break down, the process absorbs all locally available nitrogen until it decides it's had enough! As all your new babies will need it as well, they'll fight over it, and the odds are high that the wood chips will win.

There are so many variables when choosing grasses. I'd try to choose a grass that is the size (at maturity) that you want. The plume height (when it "blooms") will vary among grasses and is something to consider in the height decision... Some grasses will grow more straight up and others will arch more (think water fountain). Some will stay in a tighter "clump" and some (for lack of a better description) grow broader. Some grasses change different colors (summer & fall) and some have variegated leaves. So that can get interesting. Some grass will "do-nut" and are a hassle to divide and replant, especially if they have sharp blade like leaves. Try to find out if there are possible maintenance headaches with certain grass that you may not care to tackle. This spring and early summer, while you are getting your beds ready, it might be a good time to visit local nurseries. Check out the different grasses that they offer and make a list of the ones you particularly like. Notice the appearance of the grass in their exhibit gardens. Take your list of favorites home and take your time to do even more in depth research at home. I'd suggest to get everything else in place this year and notice the grass (that you think you like) growing in other gardens. Then make the final grass purchase late summer/early fall or even wait until next year. It's good that you are planing ahead and asking questions. Also, keep in mind that even most breathable landscape weed barriers get their pores clogged over a very short time. Because the blocked breathable pores cause conditions that weaken and kill living plants, It is not a good idea to use those products. In my opinion, a better approach would be for you to remove all the weed barrier and in it's place put down 4 or more layers of flattened cardboard (not the corregated type that consits of too much glue, instead use the thiner cardbord type found in shoe boxes and other packaged products. Maybe even poster board often used for science project displays.) Cover the cardboard with 6 to 12 inches depth of good garden soil where ever you plant each groundcover start. Then cover the entire area with a good acidic shreaded mulch at least 4 inches deep. Over time keep filling in the voids with more garden soil around the original groundcover start's soil as they seek to send out runners or roots to spread into a dense coverage. Once the groundcover gets established and is healthy, it should competively crowd out all but the most tenatious weeds. As the mulch settles it should be replenished to aways maintain a 4 inch depth. It is also my opinion, that just like the best way to fight weeds in a lawn is to keep the desired grass as full and healthy as possible, the same is true for desired groundcovers.

What NHBabs said. One of the selling points of these trees is they tolerate shade, which combined with their small size means you can squeeze them into spots an Eastern White Pine wouldn't work. No need to waste a "prime" spot on it. It would be perfectly happy (relatively) close to your house, close to power lines, or at the foot of a honeylocust. Many of the fancy cultivars aren't reliable in Zone 5. Is this a named variety? You are almost better getting a cheapo tree from Lowes. Best would be a tree from a local seed source bought from native plant society. As far as them being all over the place...there could have been an unusually smart landscaper, developer, or local nursery who got them from a local seed source or an unusually hardy variety a few years back. If you see a neighbor with a really old one ask where he got it. As for the pictures...nothing in that picture makes me concerned.

The impatiens are on Table 1, safe, for application for Azoxystrobin. Heritage uses it as its AI, and it's registered for a lot of diseases, so I'd go with their label.

You'll have to match strengths and whatnot, of course...

Great thanks......last question could I make a spray solution of DE for possibility of slugs.?

As it gets wet, DE stops working. So use that dry, or just apply Sluggo, Escar-Go, or the like. Or a small bathroom Dixie cup of beer or something sunk into the windowbox.

Seriously, I doubt you have a problem but they're famous for that. SunPatiens, however, usually don't have an issue due to their sunnier locales.
