Comments (51)Oh dear. I am feeling so undecided. I put another coat of the Polyshades on last night and it does look nice now -- dark and even. But it definitely is "mahogany" -- deep, dark red. Not the espresso color I had envisioned. But I am now hesitant to start putting on other products and other colors. I'm worried that it will look uneven, or that I will just end up with a mess. Arg -- this is what I get for being impulsive and not doing enough research up front. Anyway, I am heading out to a music festival today, so I am going to take a break from obsessing about stain and see how I feel when I get home. Maybe I will just put the new hardware in and see how I feel about it once the tile is in. The overall impression of the room is more important than the precise shade of stain on the vanity, right? Although -- I suspect that I will have a hard time finding a wall cabinet (for over the vanity) to match this stain color -- I've looked around and there is a lot of "espresso" and white (and still a bit of golden oak). Maybe a "cherry" cabinet would co-ordinate, if not match. Anyway, I need to get my mind off all this for a few hours. Have a good weekend, everyone!...See MoreHelp! Bathroom advice desperately needed
Comments (48)This bathroom is Late Modernism. The undermounted sink in laminate (which usually fails because of water infiltration into the substrate) is late 70s or 80s at the earliest. (The house may be older). So you have to be careful with regards to using midcentury hardware and such. Most of the hardware shown, boomerangs and sparkles etc. are pre-1960 in origin. This bathroom currently looks like what it is supposed to look like. Although it may be an update for the house, this bathroom looks like it did when it was put in and hasn't been updated so it looks as about authentic as it can get. The countertop looks like there may be some damage and separation of the laminate around the rim of the sink, which is typical to this sort of installation, and the faucet is not right. If it is damage, I would replace the countertop with the 20xx's version of what's there, something white with a white sink, get a faucet that is better suited to the vanity and call it done. I would not waste money tarting it up in some faux retro or half-hearted millennial modernism. If someone hates the bathroom as it is, tarting it up won't be enough, and if someone mostly likes it, tarting it up could ruin it for them....See MoreMid Century Bathroom Dilemma HELP!
Comments (8)We IMO MCM bathrooms were not really all that great and cracked tile repair is iffy and honestly do you think the money spent to repair will be money well spent. Talk to your realtor , what sells in your area. I have a MCM ranch 1956 and two things I changed right away were the bathrooms and the kitchen( I even moved the kitchen) we don’t live in the 50s anymore and I don’t think redoing something to bring to a space into our century is a bad thing. I know so many on this forum want to stay true to the original, I want to enjoy my house for how I live....See MoreHalp! bathroom reno/decor advice needed
Comments (10)I agree, the wall above the toilet is barren. I was thinking of either adding floating shelves or a leaning shelf ladder to go over the toilet. The other concern is where to put the towel bar. The door to this bathroom opens in and would hit the bar if we placed it on the wall (I asked for it to open out and the contractors pretty much laughed at me). I guess towel hooks wouldn't be a bad idea (thanks, Maureen!) I would love to add artwork but worry that the moisture would ruin them? Is there a certain type of frame that I would need to use for artwork in bathrooms? No plans to cover the linen closet - I was going to buy some nice baskets to keep it looking organized. A vanity would not fit so that is why we opted for the console sink which left us with no storage. Sorry, I don't have a photo of the blank wall, but I will upload it when I am there next. Thanks for all the advice!...See Moreapple_pie_order
