Relying on Consumer Reports
Comments (26)Another CR fan here. They don't have a magical crystal ball, just engineering and user tests, so of course their "predictions" aren't absolute. But they are a way to stack the odds a bit more in the buyer's favor. Any model by any manufacturer can turn out to be a lemon. And, unless the underlying design is hopelessly flawed, any manufacturer can make an effective and reliable model. It's for the statistical in-betweens that CR helps, as well as the information their articles. And they list all the products they test, not just the ones they recommend, because they know that not everyone's needs will be met by their recommendations. For example, two weeks ago I realized that we needed to replace our dishwasher. I didn't have much time and it had been years since I had looked at what was on the market. Thanks to CR, it took all of five minutes to identify a couple of brands with models that come up high in their ratings that also had a lower frequency of repair (I don't have time to deal with repairs either) and to identify the latest features. Then it took only a few minutes at the store to pick a model. It was not a "Best Buy" because I was willing to pay more to get certain features but it was another model which ranked high. My new DW installed, running well, and I'm pleased. Is it possible somewhere there'is a better model for my purposes? Of course, but how much better would it be? Meanwhile, I saved a lot of time, and was able to get the new one before the old one stopped working. CR is supported by subscribers, so they test products of interest to the majority. Personally, I have no need for tests of commercial spaghetti sauces, for one, but since lots of people use them I don't fault CR for testing them. They usually test a few upscale products, if only to report on whether the higher price is justified objectively....See MoreConsumer Reports gutter guard ratings and new gutter guard thread
Comments (12)I used the Home Depot type that handymac describes for many years--they worked fine. I rarely had to go up and do any cleaning--when I did, it was so easy. I had one side tucked under the shingles, and the other side clipped to the edge of the gutter. Before that I had the similar type but without the extra mesh, and those allowed the locust leaves, maple flowers and maple seeds in. When I got new gutters I unfortunately got permanent gutter covers--don't know a brand name, flat perforated metal. The holes are small, and don't seem to let anything through, but because they sit flat on the gutter (actually tilt down slightly toward the wall) debris piles up and packs under the shingle overhang, so I have to climb up twice a year to clean it even though nothing is actually in the gutter itself. I had ice dams for the first time, too, after these were installed. Of course the guy who nstalled them won't return my calls about his "guarantee" that I wouldn't have to clean....See MoreDoes anyone have an online subscription to Consumer Reports?
Comments (9)Yes we have a magazine subscription and I set up online access easily. Don’t recall how I did it but it was fairly easy with an email and password associated with my account/subscription. I am on the road but happy to look up the TP info for you. Just may take me a bit due to signal loss now and then. Well that didn’t take long....Walmart’s White Cloud ultra soft and thick (with the word ‘new’ on the package) was top rated (77). Was rated VG for disintegration. Next highest rated with a 57 was Walgreens Nice! and then another White Cloud ultra soft and thick but with an older looking label with a 52 rating. That was confusing because the names and labels were similar....See MoreFeedback? First ever Consumer Reports appliance reliability ratings
Comments (10)Kaylie - they got feedback on brands for 381,000 appliances, lots of models, but some brands were shining stars only for certain types of appliances. . As an example, GE was rated excellent for wall ovens but not for many other types of appliances. As far as models changing frequently, I think it depends on the model. Our old oven model was sold for years ( even though it was a stinker amd received terrible ratings as time went in). Our current wall oven model has been made for years... not 10 years, though. i think they focused on reliability ratings because people complained about the shorter term product tests....See MoreZalco/bring back Sophie!
