Pairing Design Style to a Basic Colonial House. Any rules?

What is your belief on pairing architecture to interior design? I'm moving from a rowhouse, in an area where rowhouse always means "stodgy, traditional old stuff" or else "sleek industrial baby!" or "hipster at the garage sale eclectic."

I'm buying a basic colonial style house built around 1980, with no real ornamentation. Under 2000 square feet, so smaller scale rooms. Front of house is windows with shutters, laid out symmetrically.

So, should I pick whatever design style in furnishings I like, since the house isn't historical? Or are there some boundaries for what feels right? Problem with me is that I like several different things (basic traditional, mid-century modern, transitional, etc, ... ) Among the big design stores, I enjoy Pottern Barn, Crate& Barrel, et al, but also Room and Board & West Elm.

I know this is a philosophical question. Just wondering what you all think. We're going to start from scratch, only bringing two pieces of furniture. So I get to play...

I do have this fun shelf that I want to bring:
