"I think my back hurts.." Hey Pete, if you only *think* your back hurts just keep on composting the way you are and soon you will *know* it hurts! LOL You are doing very well and I'm sure a lot of us would love to see pics of your compost operation. Keep going and you might end up with a system like Lloyd's! If you can get wood shavings they work well mixed with compost as a mulch. I use it regularly and the shavings disappear within a few months. Actual coarse chips from lumber mills are OK for paths but take ages to break down in my experience. Fresh wood chips from tree services are faster. So it all depends on what a person means by the term wood chips. Cardboard is useful placed between plants under mulch as weed/moisture control. Easier to work with than newspaper IMO. Paul, I never realized you live on Cape Breton Island. We have fond memories of towing a travel trailer all around the Cabot Trail back in the 70's. No one had told us that was ill-advised because of the grades. Of course we were from BC and didn't think the mountains were all that high! We also learned during that trip summer was over in the middle of August and we "enjoyed" a lovely storm coming off the Atlantic while we camped on the far side. Great memories!

Lynn: There is petroleum in all newspaper inks that I'm aware of. The soy based inks use paraffin to set the ink. Paraffin and mineral oil are petroleum based and are common machine lubes in the food industry and very commonly found on food as a coating to prevent moisture from being gained or lost with the environment, as well as in home canning (directly in contact with food). Mineral oil is also a common baby laxative. I don't suggest that newspaper ink is printed with any food-grade petroleum products, but rather suggest that the air you are breathing contains more petroleum products per ounce than compost made with newspapers. Also note that if you spray anything on your plants that can be described as horticultural oil or soap... you're almost certainly applying petroleum products directly to your food. Islandschool: Orange peels may break down slowly by default because they come from from a tropical environment where biology is in overdrive. They have a natural waxy coating to seal the fruit from drying quickly and are filled with a harsh oil to help prevent being eaten before the seeds develop. They are high in the antioxidant vitamin-C which guards them against cellular damage that could be capitalized upon by rot organisms. Store-bought oranges often are coated with additional BHT or paraffin wax to extend their moisture retention. I have not experimented with orange peels to find out a way to quickly rot them as I live in zone 5 and they are not plentiful here. If I had to guess how to compost them, I would think to mix them with things that are good at absorbing oil, such as paper and cardboard. Grinding them will expose more oil to be absorbed away, and heat will help liquify the oils and waxes. The acidity could be negated with dolomite lime (which seems to be good for plants and worms anyway) or even water that had ashes soaking in it... I searched for how to compost orange peels and came up with a thread on it for you. Here is a link that might be useful: Orange peels - composting.

Are the cabinets level in each direction? Meaning -- is this the wall out of plumb, or the cabinets? If it's the wall, I think your best bet with a gap that size would be to replace the countertop with one that can be custom fit to the wall along the back side. Butcherblock would be one inexpensive option, assuming you have woodworking tools (Ikea carries butcherblock for a very reasonable price). If you can't cut the top or have someone else do it, then you could use a separate backsplash -- not one that is part of the countertop -- and depending on its thickness it might cover a lot of that gap. Tile wouldn't cover much, but a butcherblock or laminate one would be about 3/4" thick if memory serves.

I built a compost bin nearby with builder's block from my FIL's old milk house built in 1929. We have a bunch more to collect from eastern Idaho. Lined it with a some newspaper, then a wet phone book someone threw into our trash can next to our shop doors and also a bag full of apples! Must have been my eldest son or my hubby. I couldn't believe my find. My 12 year old saves the phone books for his BSA camp outs. Good to start a fire with LOL So I guess he missed out on this one. WE get extra phone books from our neighbors who passes them out in the fall. One thing my son did was have the nerve to take one of the blocks from my compost bin to place under his snowmobile trailer's tongue when he got back. I did go out later at night to get the dog food bag and some more newspaper. Then in the morning, I could have gotten more newspaper, but didn't dare. I think the recycle people would be disappointed. Now I'm just going to ask her if I can collect her used paper. The dog food bag was a bust. I told her what I was up to and told her I was raking up the leaves in the ditch, clearing up the grass, etc. She said I could have all the leaves I want and I asked about the newspaper and she said she'll just leave the bin by my compost bin. LOL Not quite the garbage bag full of Starbuck's coffee grounds, but I'm sure it will make a nice tea! (I loved how they talked amongst themselves in spanish to decide about taking them to where I live which is behind the new subdivision) They actually loaded all the cut grasses and raked up leaves and put them in their truck and took them to my house and unloaded them for me. I wasn't expecting such service. They said they would just dump them anyway. So, I scored big time in the goal of getting other people's mulch and having it delivered. Where is that thread anyway?! I told them they can dump more of their grasses. They weren't done with this big subdivision and they also mow the shared grassy area and little parks. So I told them feel free to dump the grass too! When the grass gets long enough to mow. Plus I got the main guy's card to have him do some pruning and other stuff for me. I think the crew was amazed that this blonde haired lady, driving a ford clubwagon was willing to load it up with all the tall grasses! Let alone talk to them, as some people in this manicured area probably wouldn't bother speaking to them. So she & I scooped peanut shells into my sandwich baggie as Gary made faces & shuddered. * Posted by: antic_zone9 z9FL (My Page) on Mon, Mar 15, 04 at 20:13 You know you're a compost wacko (or a wannabe) when: ...you take morning walks on trashday, pretending to be exercising, when you're really scouting the free bags of leaves. ...you walk the same route again, this time with the dog, in order not to arouse suspicion because you want to snag a beautiful closet door that will make a perfect wormbin (because of it's louvers). :) ...you don't worry about working out in a gym because you get your upper body workout by forking and turning your garbagecan compost bin. :) ...your DW is actually proud of you because of your commitment to something worthwhile (although you know she wonders about your sanity sometimes!) ;) ...you're ticked off that you can't compost plastic, because it won't break down within your lifetime, but you are happy that you are composting 60% of your garbage! ...you read composting books in the restroom and wonder if the DW would EVER let you have a composting toilet in the next house. (even if it was YOU that maintained it!) ...you subconsciously thank all of those hard-working neighbors who painstakingly rake up all of their leaves so you can steal their bags the next morning! ;) ...(this has been said before, but what the heck!)
