Sure you can do that. The bonsai folks almost always take the cones off. It can't hurt.

many suggest.. the energy was spent long ago ... things happen in tree time ...

so removing them isnt going to have much of any impact ...

but do whatever you want ... to make yourself happy ... i doubt the plant cares one way or another ...

btw.. after planting.. it might be years.. before it cones again ... so on one hand.. i say enjoy them now ...

if you plan on planting it in the ground in fall.. just do it them.. DO NOT REPOT IT .... that would be 2 transplants in one season ... imo.. too much stress ... what i might call.. loving it to death ...

since it takes 2 or 3 years to get established after a transplanting.. which repotting is.. if you are going to hold it potted for 3 or more years.. then the repotting might be reasonable ... but then ....

how big is it.. with that many cones ??? .. how about a pic???

Ken makes a valid point about not transplanting it now, however if I buy plants in between Feb and Nov (I only plant in winter), and they are severely pot-bound, I always move them up. You can double your root mass in that time and that will give you a stronger plant to put in the ground.

The pine is about 2 ft tall and I've done upgrading the size of the pot in the past with different plants with great results. I am not moving/changing the soil from original pot, just adding soil as insulation and for root growth during 6-8 weeks of the hottest weather in summer. I think it makes sense. Pic to follow.

those are pollen .. not cones.. per se ... leave them alone ... imo ... [is the proper term sacs?... or are they male cones.. whats the proper term?]

up potting is either simply removing the old pot ... and sticking the gob in the new pot ... or totally bare rooting .. doing root surgery.. then repotting in the new ...

if the former.. first.. go for it ...

if the latter ... i would do it in the proper season ...

Hi Alex, I think that's a prolific amount of seed cones on your little tree which makes me think there's a source of stress. Could you tell us if the blue strap on the graft union is excessively tight restricting the cambien. If so you need to remove it.

I just found out that cones stay on Pinus densiflora ‘Umbraculifera’ for 2 years. I also have purple ones, but just only a few. I guess purple one are this year and green ones are from the last year...

Take that blue strap off, regardless of how tight it is and remove the stake. They are unnecessary. Nobody knows exactly what causes coning/lack of coning. With some it's age, stress can certainly be a factor, I've noticed that often I'll have cones on the plant in the pot but then it takes a few years once it's in the ground to really cone again (could be 'bonsai' effect, could be stress of being in pot?). Your plant looks healthy overall.

I ended up cutting all cones off 3 weeks ago. Top needles were getting yellow and it was a concern. Moved to full sun as well, so it could have made a difference. No more yellowing for the time being.

You are correct about the cones, I don't see the male pollen cones, that was a large amount produced last year.
