King Arthur Flour Recall

I've been out of it for two weeks with pneumonia and when I picked up my IPad a short while ago, CNN headlines were leading into the fact that 5 lb. bags of King Arthurunbleached flour being recalled due to possibility of ecoli. Never would I have expected this product recalled for this. They gave the "Best By" dates, etc. I should have checked to see if someone else had already posted this. Sorry if this is a repeat.

This is a few weeks after the Aldi brand flour recall. 17 people so far, 3 hospitalized. Many will never be reported as illness is often assumed to be something else. Takes a few days in the gut to multiply. I posted because it is best to be informed.

Of the ill, the youngest was7 and the oldest in mid 80's. A high percentage were women in their 20's 30's.

Probably the raw flour residue not cleaned from a cutting area. Then used to cut raw veg or fruit. Wet flour at room temp (contaminated) will multiply bacteria quickly.

If someone does get sick at least the possibility is known. A misdiagnosis can be dangerous as an antibiotic can elevate rather than cure. Only a stool sample can detect this type of illness. Advances in the testing processes, even the past few years, is why we see more recalls than the past. We used call it a bug, or 24hour flu. Ride it out. Medical attention with extreme dehydration.

Madonna, I saw that. As long as you cook the food made with the flour you should be OK, according to the experts in such things. Since my flour has been decanted into a stainless steel canister (which means I can't check dates or lot numbers) and I've already made pancakes, muffins and pie crust with my latest bag, and no one has become ill, I'm guessing we're OK.

I'm sitting here thinking of times when we'd use flour without cooking it, and ingesting it. My mind is a total blank.

I've been a happy KA fan for years. I use their AP, unbleached cake, bread (not recalled, thank goodness), and high-protein flours with success. I can't imagine what lvmadison means by a "better" quality of flour. In the thread on looking for a better flour, I asked what lvm didn't like and didn't see an answer. I have a batch of bagels made with KA Sir Lancelot flour rising right now. I made two batches of cookies over the weekend with KA AP and KA cake flour. My friends loved them and took a whole lot home to share with their spouses. Over Lunar New Year I used KA AP for long-life noodles which got many compliments and requests to take leftovers home. I really don't know what would make these recipes "better". Cheryl

I took advantage of that "$40 a yr membership" when it was first offered back a couple months ago. I have already earned back the $40 and now feel I am home free. It is an automatic renewal one yr later, need to be on your toes and cancel if you do not want an additional yr. I usually stay away from automatic renewals. I do more and more online ordering of 'special things " . For instance just recently CF had a discussion on Grade B maple syrup. I had finally gave up hunting for it in local grocery stores, I use it in a KA maple oatmeal bread recipe. I think it was annie 92 or grainlady who said they ordered it online and froze the balance. Oh, the KA website is less for ordering regular flour than the specialty flours and ingredients. It's where I go for cocoa now that I can't get anything but Hersheys or store brand at the grocerey and the turnoover at specialty stores is questionable. They have pasta flours, high gluten and whole grains for breads. And very good quality parchment sheets. Flavorings and chips you won't find elsewhere. My sister enjoys their mixes so she got some as a housewarming gift -- that kind of thing. I ordered before Christmas, so I am good for now.

Um...with the raw eggs when you lick the spoon?

Me too on the canister. They also said no one has gotten sick. Also that there was a potential that the flour could have been infected, not that they were sure it had. Hooray for the overabundance of caution, but I'm just not going to worry about it. I don't let the old folks lick the spoon. :)

I’ve also dumped my recent purchase into a large container so can’t check dates either. But, like Annie, I’ve used it several times and no one has become ill.

yup, in the canister ... but unless I 'lick the spatula', dunna gonna worry ... love how the old 5 lb bags are now 4 lb bags for more scratch ...

and I indiscriminately dump/combine KAF with GM and the local store brands ... unbleached gets a sep container ...

Yes sleevendog, both the Aldi and KAF flour recalls are from flour processed by ADM (Archer Daniels Midland), hardly a small miller. I would assume that they are from the same batches.
