In desperate need of help changing very poorly designed kitchen
Comments (48)cpartist no, hubby doesn't do any cooking, as he leaves the kitchen a complete disaster, uses a hundred dishes, and always manages to use the wrong pots or pans, so has been permanently banned from using it. You would think he wouldn't care what I wanted done with the kitchen, but he is definitely opinionated. He is sweet, though, and did the pantry as a surprise for me, because he thought it'd make me happy. That's what makes my situation so difficult, because I feel bad and a bit selfish for wanting to tear it out. Again, the u-shape is out, because he has set his feet against changing the pass-through. I also don't want to hear another rant about how much he paid for the header beams (apparently they're very expensive) and how he's not moving them ever. Maybe I could convince him to turn it into a doorway and close up the other doorway, but even with the pantry removed, I think it would leave less room for cabinets than I have now. Do you think that would be a good option nonetheless?...See MoreNeed help with changing kitchen layout
Comments (23)Ha! I typed that very idea last night, then deleted it before I posted, thinking you wouldn't want to give up that lovely pantry since you have 5 kids. Plus it was late. Here's a quick idea: You have little kids right now (and at least one high chair), so I think you can get six seats around the island. Later, when the kids are bigger, remove one seat on the long side and they can still fit at an 8' x 42" island. It looks as if the dining nook seats 8 (you can have another kid! :), so the island won't need to seat the whole family. I moved the island to give you a few more inches between it and the sink/DW. Since there is now plenty of space between the cooktop and island, you can pull the cabinets on that wall out to be flush with a standard depth fridge, so you have more space in the fridge, and more counter space around the cooktop. If you are doing custom cabinets, the drawers on that wall can be deeper, to add to storage capacity. I also included a window seat/reading nook just off the play room, for the kids. (And I love window seats.) GW discussions--deeper counters GW discussions--deeper drawers...See Moreneed help changing livingroom, colour palettes
Comments (12)Olive, gold and navy look great together. If you want to keep the room lighter paint the walls white or light gray. If you want to go dark and dramatic Navy or Olive are lovely. Add some white and blacks to help the eye rest and the room will be trendy and dramatic but comfortable to live in also. Comments (20)I agree with the vent hood and lighting changes. A glass pendant in green or aqua lighting could look good. As far as seating, I always liked the Tig Countertop seats from Crate & Barrel when I had them in my last home. They are contemporary and sleek. And far more comfortable than they looks. But they wouldn't go with the french look of your dining area. I assume you plan to change out those chairs as well? If you like coastal looks, sea grass or a light natural/driftwood color is a good option too. If you are looking for light and bright I think you would need to paint the island. I would also get lighter drawer/cabinet pulls. https://www.crateandbarrel.com/tig-metal-counter-stool/s642141 https://www.ballarddesigns.com/jo-jo-pendant/lighting/indoor-lighting/pendants/444240?listIndex=5 https://www.overstock.com/Lighting-Ceiling-Fans/Belinda-Blue-Glass-Cluster-Pendant-Chandelier-Antique-Black-Finish/16001564/product.html...See MoreHU-339704402
