Kitchen Color Change Needed--Help!!
Comments (21)Thank you all for the replies!!! I don't think green would go at all with our counters either. Our kitchen used to be a light brown and caramel color (previous owners) so I am thinking light brown might be the answer... Carolj 1979---the chandelier is from Home Depot. I love it, love it. The one in the first picture is the one they sell in the store, we had to special order the black (and we have the black pendant over our sink). I like the Blonde in the first picture I put above, it's the 2nd one with the BRIGHT sun that makes me want to cry. It's just SO yellow!! I can't ask DH to repaint the living room as he just finished it a couple of months ago lol. Anyone have thoughts on me doing the kitchen a burnt orange (more red) color? DH said he'd be willing to that but he'd have to repaint the Raspberry dining room as it would definitely clash......See MoreNeed Help - Backsplash in Contemporary Kitchen
Comments (29)My friend, who is a professional artist and product designer, photoshopped my DH's kitchen design posted above- adding tile choices, my actual appliances & pendants on order, faucet, some of her original paintings and even a a picture she took of my DH and I walking in the park - not to mention the bowl of artichokes! The pendants are not as long as shown, OTR microwave is too far down, DW will be paneled, and colors are not perfect but it is a good rendering showing the backsplash and counters. Floor is not as dark orange and cabinets will be more orangy - not as light. DR built in will be Wenge. Interested to get opinions of which combinations, if any, you like best and why. Comments (23)Ha! I typed that very idea last night, then deleted it before I posted, thinking you wouldn't want to give up that lovely pantry since you have 5 kids. Plus it was late. Here's a quick idea: You have little kids right now (and at least one high chair), so I think you can get six seats around the island. Later, when the kids are bigger, remove one seat on the long side and they can still fit at an 8' x 42" island. It looks as if the dining nook seats 8 (you can have another kid! :), so the island won't need to seat the whole family. I moved the island to give you a few more inches between it and the sink/DW. Since there is now plenty of space between the cooktop and island, you can pull the cabinets on that wall out to be flush with a standard depth fridge, so you have more space in the fridge, and more counter space around the cooktop. If you are doing custom cabinets, the drawers on that wall can be deeper, to add to storage capacity. I also included a window seat/reading nook just off the play room, for the kids. (And I love window seats.) GW discussions--deeper counters GW discussions--deeper drawers...See MoreNeed some help with changing 70’s kitchen
Comments (20)I agree, I've seen lots of '70s kitchens, and that doesn't look the part to me. Actually, though I'm pretty far from the decorator type (more the practical type), I think it's mostly pretty nice as is. The backsplash doesn't do anything for me, but it's not obnoxious either. That could go either way. I really like those cabinets a lot, and agree that some modest (not too bold) pulls would spruce them up. For goodness sake, don't paint them, you'll ruin them (IMO). Unlike (probably) most here, I don't object at all to your counters, though I can't tell how worn them might be. If they're in good shape, I'd leave them alone. I see nothing at all wrong with the refrigerator either. I just can't bring myself to replace one that works fine. When it quits working and the repair is too expensive, that's the time to regroup. I'm also not a fan of features like ice and water in the doors -- that's just more stuff to break. And spare us these bloody "smart" appliances. Ugh. I don't know about the windows. Where there are no close neighbors, I like them with no blinds or curtains at all. I love natural light and outdoor views. They make kitchen chores easier, IMO. Hmm, a skylight or two might be nice, or sun pipes. I like the light well enough, but suspect it's probably nowhere near adequate in terms of total lumens. I'd try to match it with a few more of similar style. Can lights are still popular, but I've never liked them where the ceilings are high. They're OK with low ceilings, where surface luminaires can make things feel too closed in. You need an annoyingly large number of them regardless. I'm a big fan of indirect (bounce off ceiling) light for its evenness. Pendants that cast some light upward are good things. I can't tell if there's enough room, maybe not, but you might consider supplemental LED or even high CRI T5 fluorescent strips atop the cabinets. Definitely put LED lights under the cabinets, if you don't already have them. I might change the flooring. That's ceramic tile, isn't it? Ceramic looks nice and lasts and lasts, but just about anything you drop on a ceramic tile floor breaks. I'd go for something a bit darker to anchor the room, but not too dark. Again, though, I'm not a decorator. I am frugal, though. I want anything I do to a house that isn't basic maintenance to return the investment -- or better -- in resale value....See Morekcassidylaw
