Basement kitchen - starting from scratch!
Comments (1)Still need some help - those walls are being insulated and framed today. Thanks!...See More$20k DIY Kitchen from Scratch
Comments (2)I would try a few custom shops and also try "Just Cabinets" KM usually has a sale on cabinets in June and Just Cabinets is usually reasonable anyway. Also look at Kitchen distributors in timonium and try a few lumber yards...84 lumber comes to mind. There are other options besides IKEA....See MoreLooking for kitchen layout ideas, from scratch!!
Comments (35)No problem! The bump out change doesn't really affect the layout because I had all the fronts flush anyway. If anything, it is better to have the extra space behind the fridge. I might fill in the bump-out everywhere except where the fridge is going for simplicity's sake (this would allow you to use standard cabinets sizes, which is always cheapest). Or you could fill in the bump-out just at counter level and above, but have custom drawers under the counter that extend the full depth of the bump-out for extra storage space. Or you could fill in the bump just six inches everywhere (everywhere except the fridge) instead of the full 12" and have 30" deep counters/lowers and 18" deep uppers where the bump-out, bringing them flush with the 24" deep lowers and 12" deep uppers on the non-bumped-out parts of the same wall. Extra-deep counters are such a boon, and I can see liking having options when it comes to cabinet depth. Some items are suited better to being stored on a more shallow shelf, and some to a deeper. I was really hoping you had another bathroom upstairs. Would it be possible to add another shower upstairs? I think with six people, you definitely need a second one. If you are really interested in the kitchen like this, you might post a floor plan of the upstairs and get ideas for where a second shower might be squeezed in. Or the basement, if it is finished. Growing up, my parents had a master bath with a shower, and the three kids shared the hall bath shower. That worked just fine, but I am sure it would not have worked minus one shower, plus one kid....See MoreNew u shaped kitchen with island from scratch
Comments (25)It would help to know a little bit more about you and your family - right now, people are designing with only a rough idea of what you want. E.g., do you want seating at the island? If so, you will need wider aisles on the seating side (unless the seats are on the open side). I will link to the "Layout Help" FAQ as well as the Kitchen Design FAQ threads at the end. The Layout Help FAQ will ask you a few questions to help us come up with a design that will fit your lifestyle, family, etc. Regarding aisles...some of the info up-thread is a bit misleading. Any/all work aisles should be a minimum of: 42" if it is a one-person work aisle (and always a one-person work aisle) - this means only one person prepping/cooking/prepping/cleaning up at one time in the same aisle - not someone prepping while someone else is cleaning up, cooking, etc. If each primary work zone is on a different aisle, then all aisles can be 42". 48" if more than one person will be working in the aisle at the same time - someone prepping while someone else is also prepping or cooking or cleaning up. Note that if you have seating on a primary work zone aisle, than add another 18" to the aisle IF the overhang is a minimum of 15" of clear leg/knee space. If the overhang is less then 15", add that 18" plus whatever your overhang is lacking (e.g., if you have a 12" overhang, then add yet another 3" to the aisle.) For a less-used work zone aisle with seating (e.g., Snack Center), add 12" (plus the missing overhang depth, if any). .
