No primer or sanding painting over semi-gloss?

A painter just painted over a brand new interior entry door which had been painted in semi-gloss. He had painted it the wrong color accidentally about 2 months ago. He used 2 coats of eggshell paint (about 20 minutes apart) with no sanding, no primer, no prep. Told us “it would be fine because the paint is so new, and eggshell looks almost like semi gloss anyway.”

Should we be concerned? I’ve always done prep when painting over semi-gloss because peeling paint is a nightmare and affects every layer of paint in the future. Not crazy about eggshell on the door either.

it's a wait and see if it adhered correctly. wait about 30 days and do a scratch test.

I wouldnt be crazy about the eggshell on the door either, if all the others are semi gloss. If that semi gloss is latex paint, the least he should have done was to sand it so paint has something to adhere too. If semigloss paint is oil, well, then it will most likely start to bubble and peel, since there is no primer.

Thanks very much, guys! Phew! The scuffing sounds a bit less labor intensive! :-) Our painters suggested using the wasted paint on some exterior woodwork - doors, louvers etc. Do you think that a high gloss alkyd would be suitable for this purpose, or should we cut our losses?! For the walls, clean ( krud kutter) or some such product made for cleaning paint( so as not to leave a film), do the repairs, wipe the dust off, prime with Fresh Start( you could have the primer tinted toward the finish coat), apply 2 finish coats , done. The ceiling just needs a light sanding with 100 grit paper, wipe the dust off and paint

Clean them! Wash walls with Dirtex and let dry. I would sand the walls with a pole sander to smooth away any sponge marks, dust nibs, etc. If it's already smooth enough for you, prime it with Zinsser 1 2 3 and then two coats of paint. Michael

If you sprayed a wet coat, peeling will occur if the paint is disturbed before it adheres to the primer. Spray finishes are more delicate than a brush or roller application since the spray paint is applied without any working pressure. Roller and brush actually work the paint tightly against the primer. I don't think you'll have future problems once the paint is cured.

And all eggshell paints I have ever seen were far, far, far from semi-gloss!

I would have done a quick sand on it, but it's paint over paint and should adhere just fine.

As long as it is latex over latex, you are probably fine. As fresh as the paint is, sanding may have only just removed the old paint in areas, which would have made the finish look even worse.I'd be more concerned with how eggshell would look and wear on a door, as it will most likely look nothing like a semi-gloss. Is it possible that he used satin instead, and was saying it would look like semi-gloss?

If latex were applied over oil, it would most definitely need a primer. I haven't actually seen much bubbling from latex over oil, but sometimes the oils will seep through the surface of the latex (as brown spots), and the adhesion of latex to oil is pretty poor so you get peeling with wear overtime, especially on a door.

Thank you all for the feedback! This was a punch list item, so I let the GC know how the door was painted so that we have some recourse if the paint starts to peel down the road.

Do you have other doors that have the semi gloss. If so, the one just redone is going to look a bit out of place. I would ask them to redo it like it was.
