Conversation Rooms
Comments (18)Conversation Rooms. I love the concept. One of my favorite rooms is the living room in the movie It's Complicated. It is a Nancy Meyers movie and the living room has a bunch of comfy chairs and one sofa arrnaged around a largish slate coffee table that looks a little higher than the usual coffee tables. I love the natural fabrics and the color palette that is muted with some throws for pops of colors. I love the house itself as it is an adobe house in So. cal and the feel of it is gorgeous. If only I could capture that in my adobe home :) Here is what the set design notes said.. Meyers also took her design cues from the color of the rooftops of the idyllic coastal town of Santa Barbara. "What I like about Santa Barbara is the rich color that saturates your vision at every turn," she says. From cashmere throws and chair upholstery to a bowl of fruit on the dining table, the color orange (think of the orange/brown color of an Hermès box) is used as an accent throughout the film. The decor had to accent Streep's fair complexion as well, so Meyers used "creams and beiges that would capture the beauty of her skin." Rubino mixed high-end furnishings--Calvin Fabrics and Dessin Fournir and George Smith furniture--with antiques from 1st Dibs and items from West Elm. "My goal was to capture the essence of Meryl's character as someone who dances to the beat of her own drum, " she explains. Comments (32)Am I the only one who is seeing a table in front of the fireplace?? That is an issue--much larger than the TV. I think the TV is placed well--given the room constraints. Who decided the point of "over the fireplace" space was for art? People in movie theaters are often sitting close up and thus looking up. Some people prefer that. What do YOU prefer? I am guessing looking up. I look at this room and feel it needs 'cozy'. I would want the tree to be near the window--plants like light--fake tree..well near the light would enhance to impression of REAL. The lamp over the sofa is very MCM. The sofa is close also. I think the biggest issue is you deciding on a style. The rugs pictured are leaning to MCM . The chairs, TV, fire place are not. Adding drapes will warm the room up--but not help with the MCM. The room is a mix and I think that is what is not working....See MoreWhat do you think of sunken living rooms?
Comments (36)Hello All. We bought a home in Ca. built in the mid 70's that has a sunken living room. We did not really think too much about it when we bought it. Yes, I think it is a 70's dated look but the views, school district and location were the selling points. I LOVE my house. It has been 12 years since we bought it and I have entertained a lot! No one has ever fallen. My Mom and Dad moved in with me in their 90's and can navigate the step down. That said my foyer is sautillo tile in a reddish brown color and there are 3 steps down to the cream carpeted living room directly opposite the large foyer. I too have large floor to ceiling windows opposite the entrance probably for dramatic effect, a huge floor to vaulted ceiling fireplace with large hearth on the left and a wrought iron railing to the right dividing the foyer level dining room from the living room. Rather odd in today's design world. The wrought iron railing extends down the stairs on the dinning room side. So with the railing, several steps and a cream carpet in the living room there may be enough visual cues for the transition. This room did have a sunken bar within it when we bought it. That was very odd as the bartender/bar was at waist height when standing in the room. LOL we floored it over to make the room all one level!...See MoreWhat do you think of this room?
Comments (27)Is it possible that the view is a mural with a row of plants in front? I don't understand how if it's a real window how some plants near the floor appear to be coming through the opening....I do like some of this, not the moldy book which gives me a creepy feeling about the ones on the shelves. It looks like random elements cobbled together through photoshop that couldn't exist in real life, like the glass table top that runs under the 'coffee table' - and so much more; weird and interesting....See Moregroveraxle
