Help with updating exterior of 80's side hall colonial
Comments (24)I am a HUGE fan of Timberlane shutters in PA. The quality of these shutters is extraordinary. I have had them on my house now for 16 years - had them painted by my local painter, still look great. My DD got them about 3 years ago and they now offered the color she wanted in a factory paint job. The rep told me that these same shutters had been on the outside of their building in PA (harsh winters there!) now for 19 years and still looked great. One of the things they offer is copper guards that slip right on top of the shutter. Shutters tend to rot from water getting into the seams where the shutter dowels are held. This prevents that from happening. I think this is part of their success. Yes, they are expensive, but they will last for many decades with little if any maintenance required....See MoreSplit-Level Exterior Remodel - Opine on our design
Comments (7)The porch area will remain as is and already has the board and batten style, we'll just give it a fresh coat of white paint. I hear you on the columns, I suppose I should have been more clear. We trend towards modern but don't mind the craftsman-type style as well since some homes on our block are craftsman. Thus we thought the columns would be a nice touch regardless. Garage doors - seem to be in good condition so really wasn't looking to replace but I'm open to refinishing them in a gel-stain perhaps. I've seen some folks do a wood colored gel-stain the looks decent so I can try that. Our front door is hidden but we replaced that as well and need to decide on a color to match the exterior....See MorePlease help! Updating Exterior of our Garrison Colonial
Comments (2)I am in the same boat. We have a Garrison Colonial that needs an update. I think the best approach is a full front porch (also the most expensive options) but since we just added a screen porch to the back, I am looking for a less expensive options. I am considering adding a awning style portico held up with corbels to the front or perhaps a trellis above the windows to help disguise the overhang. I am also considering ditching the shutters around the door and adding some white panels to make the door look bigger, adding wider trim around the windows and eliminating the shutters altogether, changing the siding, and perhaps adding a panel or window box under the window. Below are a few ideas, I am considering perhaps they might work for you. I would love to see what you decide to do. Below are some of the ideas that might work for you. Not sure what you call this style portico, matches better with the roof line. Maybe a trellis above the windows to hide overhang...See MoreThe exterior of my 1960s side split needs a makeover! Comments (12)-Replace the siding (not sure what colour?) and re-brick over the red brick portion of the house. [why rebrick?] - Replace the pillar with something more craftsman style. [no. This is not a craftsman style house and No room.] - Enlarge the window above the garage (this is the main bedroom) by doing a cut down enlargement. [yes!!] - New shutters (not sure what colours) [no shutters. Shutters are dated except for a couple styles of home.] - Replace the garage door (again, colours are a ??) - Maybe window box planters underneath the other front windows. [no. Too high maintenance. A bed w good for season interest will get you more than boxes. They don’t look good year round]. - New door [color statement] - New garage door and garage light - Change up the landscaping a bit...no idea how though [what is sun for front yard? approximate growing zone?] - Add a lamp post maybe [no!]...See MoreRelated Professionals
