San Marzanos Stunted?

San Marzano seedlings have grown for 8 weeks now. Some look more pitiful than others. Have had them in my windows but not much sunlight the way my home faces. I began hardening them off today...maybe moving them outdoors might help. I have not fertilized them. I have been growing them for almost 8 weeks now and this is all they have done so far. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Novice gardener here. In north Texas zone 8 a I believe.

Growth of tomato plants is checked if they are exposed to low temperatures. Otherwise maybe the 8 weeks in potting soil without fertilizer is the problem. Without a photo or even a description of what constitutes "pitiful" in this particular instance nobody here is going to be able to zero in on what the exact problem may be. However if you have a USDA Cooperative Extension Service branch office or a good independent garden center nearby you could try taking a few of your plants there and seeing what they say. To use the Extension office you will have to go there when they are open during weekdays. Or find out where and when one of their Master Gardener clinics is being held (if you go to the office you may get input from the Extension agent, whereas the clinics are always "manned" by volunteers that have taken and passed a course). If you try a garden center avoid showing up during a busy time like Saturday afternoon so as to have the best chance of getting somebody's full attention.

Although not in the Bay area, San Marzano has disappointed me for years. I vowed that this would be the last year of trying... In the past, the plants have looked bad and although the fruit tastes wonderful, the yield has been low as well. My garden is not huge and there are so many varieties to try... I am now growing SM 3. When I started the seeds, I had little faith but the seedlings were attention getting. I prepared for failure and only planted one plant, but I have to say it looks GREAT!! It has more fruit then any other variety, in my garden so far this year. A friend, that I gave seedlings (SM and SM Redorta and SM 2) to in the past, plants his in well protected areas and said that when we had a late frost, the SM plant was the best he's seen. Perhaps SM is too wussy for my garden environment, but I am surprised daily at the health and vigor of the SM 3. I'll share seeds in a few months. Email me if interested.

One of the best sauces we've made was when we add in some of our sweet frying peppers. It adds a bit more depth and a touch of sweetness. Here's a small batch getting started (mostly trying to clear counter space and make sure nothing went bad rather than making to freeze): Big Daddy Pepper, 1 or 2 Striped Romans, some Extreme Bushes, a couple small Cherokee Purple (counter ripened because they got knocked off), and Scallions Chocolate Cherry and Shimmer joined the party Gotta have herbs! Looks like sage, rosemary, oregano, and thyme in this one; parsley may have hopped in later with the salt and pepper, but I didn't take more progress pictures. Tomatoes don't require insect pollination. Their blooms are self-fertile (contain both male and female parts) and most are already pollinated before they even open. So something else is at work here. Something is stressing the plant. Are you familiar with thrips, how tiny they are and difficult to see? Since you purchased this plant from a nursery I am wondering if it might have been mis-labeled - a fairly common thing? Reason I ask that is your description of the plant's growth. I grow several strains of San Marzano each year, although not in containers, and have never found any of them to be anything but vigorous plants. Agree about fertilizer. Regular potting soil is usually fertilizer-less, and after a few weeks the plants need some. Stunting will result without it. You're plants don't look too leggy, so I think sunlight isn't your main problem. MIracle-Gro is a standard, and best to use half-strength. For container plants, liquid is always much better than powder, which is slow to improve the soil at root level. Oh, this is an ancient post.
