First hybrid daylily blooming today.

We had our first hybrid daylily bloom today. H. dumortieri always leads the way, but it is bloomed out now (it doesn't last long). We just got Bites Like a Thousand Teeth this spring. The grower had it in a greenhouse and gave it to us in a pot. We lost the first one we had, so we hope this one makes it. I was going to get the pollen from the flower, but it doesn't have any. I hope that is not the norm with this variety.

Our seedling beds are ready for planting. We switched to growing under landscape fabric last season. It sure helps in keeping down the weeds.

Can't wait for the others to start blooming. We are seeing a lot of scapes and, as usual, the first year seedlings are leading the way. It seems they are always anxious to bloom their first year/

The second flower of Bites Like a Thousand Teeth was even prettier today. Today's bloom had pollen too so I saved some to freeze for later.

Might be a good thing it had no pollen, look at the teeth! A pretty one, especially for 1st bloom. I am looking forward to seeing your blooms.

Hi, I have no blooms yet although one of my seedlings looks like it will beat everything else and bloom tomorrow. The top of the bud is split so I hope it opens all the way. I have buds on Emerald Eye, Yellow Bouquet, Cosmopolitan, Rosy Polyphemus, Mary Williams, Zona Rosa and Siloam Ribbon Candy. Some of these rebloomed for me last year so maybe I just have leftover scapes from that. I think Yellow Bouquet was quite early last year. I have many seedlings with scapes. The one that is about to bloom was a bee pod on Gordon Biggs from 2008. It was the largest pod I collected that year and had the biggest and most seeds in it. I decided if it was that determined to grow then I would start the seeds. It is probably a cross with itself. Another of mine with buds is Strawberry Candy x Ever Delightful. Some on seeds I purchased are Lord Trickster x Unknown, Cliffs of Abique x Wind Master, Admirable Curmudgeon x Doo Wop, Early Alibi x Coral Taco. Can't wait to see them!!

Another bloom on SARATOGA SPRINGTIME yesterday. I din't even bother to take a picture of it as it was down on the ground on the worlds shortest scape, just like the other shot. I also had a bloom on COUNT IT ALL JOY which is one of the 2009 intros of Karol Emmerich. Its one of these sort of counts scapes as the scape was there but much smaller of course when it arrived. That one I did take a picture of but my pictures from yesterday are not downloaded yet.

Lovely blooms Jane! I especially like the last one. I still have a couple blooming: Final Touch, and Siloam Cinderella (reblooming). I also have a couple new ones this year, that have set buds and will hopefully bloom by this week-end. If they turn out nice, I'll post them. Thanks for sharing your beauties! Julie

I hope Bites Like a Thousand Teeth makes it for you this time. Many of my Devito daylilies seem a bit tender.

As for your seedling beds, do you use a circle cutting tool like Bob Faulkner does? I can see how that could cut down on a lot of the weeding. I've spent the past four days weeding my seedling beds, and it is so time consuming.

Debra. we cut slits on the strips. You can't see them in the picture but the fabric has a yellow stripe every foot. We really don't like that method because the fabric will shred, especially when you pull a weed out. I know Tom Polston uses some sort of drill to cut holes, but he plants in black plastic. Bob has been toying with the idea of burning a hole, but I guess for now we will just cut the slits. That's what Mike and Sandy Holmes do.

We used the landscape fabric last season and it does make a great difference. We had one piece blow off during high winds (and there's no putting it back now) and weeds will grow up in the slits, but still it has cut down the weeds tremendously. With all the rain we have had this spring, if we hadn't put down the plastic the weeds would be knee high. The older seedlings can handle that ok, but the babies just get lost.

Seedling question for you Nancy [or anyone else with an opinion]: how many years do you wait to split a seedling clump that is doing well? I have 5 varieties in one clump, and 3 in another and I'd like to give them their own spots. This is blooming year 3.

I tried landscape fabric, and while it works for weeds, the Bermuda grass thrives in it and it gave me a worse headache. I tried newspaper but it is so temporary.

Brad, we never plant them in communal pots so they are always individual. I would say that splitting them as soon as possible would be a good idea.

Hi Brad, I don't plant my seedlings in clumps . I start them ( a single cross maybe max 6 seeds) in a single container but as they get bigger I pot them up in individual pots till they get a bit bigger or plant them straight into the gardens as first year seedlings.
