My First Daylily Bloom of the Year was Today!!

Here it is. VERNAL TUTONE bought and planted last sepember from Olallie daylily gardens. This is one of the batch of early bloomers I picked from them. They had some they said blomed in May and some early June. Well, I never thought anything would really bloom in May for me here.

Last year my first blooms were June 21th and it was BLACK EYED STELLA and a common ditch lily. But mostly they did not start until the 24th-26th of June.

That's a lovely bitone, Rita.

As it multiplies, it should make a showy early clump.

Hoping you have a wonderfully long daylily season this year with your extended season bloomers, from early to late.

Looking forward to seeing more!

Oh MY,Thats a gorgeous Bi Tone DL.I really like the Bi Tones.Can't wait to see the DL's blooming in the planter boxes out front.You have put a lot of work into your front yard,and its going to be gorgeous.

Juliet, Congrats on the first bloom! love the diamond dusting, my Sue rothbauer is like that too. Just found a scape peeking up from her this morning. Got my first bloom on Little grapette this morning. I had forgotten how small the blooms are on that one. My Mildred Mitchell has a bud that is bulging and looks like it could just pop open like a balloon flower! You can even see the pink throught the cracks, pretty sure ill have my FFo of that one to post tomarrow. Its our turn up here in the north now!!! - Jessica

I know some people nip off the side buds to get larger flowers, & those large flowers are definitely impressive. Especially if you put them in an arrangement. I got so many complements on Bartzella & Coral Sunset. Coral and yellow peonies are never seen around here, & nothing that big. Yeah, I know we need the rain, & really hasn't been too bad. So far we haven't had the heavy storms we get lots of years that blow the petals off peonies & knock iris to the ground. And there have been plenty of gaps where I can at least walk around & look, although too muddy to do much. But watch the weeds grow.

Kate - The scapes are not horribly short - 25-26 inches. They're just not the 35 inches on the registration. And to be in the back row here, the scapes need to be taller to be seen once the plants in front of it start blooming. Debra

Debra. we cut slits on the strips. You can't see them in the picture but the fabric has a yellow stripe every foot. We really don't like that method because the fabric will shred, especially when you pull a weed out. I know Tom Polston uses some sort of drill to cut holes, but he plants in black plastic. Bob has been toying with the idea of burning a hole, but I guess for now we will just cut the slits. That's what Mike and Sandy Holmes do. We used the landscape fabric last season and it does make a great difference. We had one piece blow off during high winds (and there's no putting it back now) and weeds will grow up in the slits, but still it has cut down the weeds tremendously. With all the rain we have had this spring, if we hadn't put down the plastic the weeds would be knee high. The older seedlings can handle that ok, but the babies just get lost. Nancy

The extra earlies are just as special as the extra lates, aren't they? They get more attention because they have less competition, I reckon. And VERNAL TUTONE opened well, too - a keeper for sure!

I don't think I have ever seen such a good bi-color. The sepals are SO yellow. I'd love to eventually hybridize a pink petal, yellow sepal flower... that would be cool! Usually I am not big on the rusty color daylilies, but for somereason the bi-color of that one is really cool.

That is much prettier than the one daylily I have open today which is Stella.....None of my others even have scapes. I'm months away from anyone else blooming.

I really was surprised at how pretty it was. I wasn't expecting too much from these early bloomers I put in.

I personally love bi-colors but don't have many. I can see that I am going to look for some more good bi-colors and add more. But this one was a very happy surprise.

I had another bloom yesterday from one of those extra earlies I bought from Ollalie Daylily Gardens last year. This one is SARATOGA SPRINGTIME. Very dissapointing as its practicly down on the ground, the scape is so short.

Also STELLA SUPREME has shot up lots and lots of scapes with buds.

I have scapes on Happy Returns now but not on Stella Supreme or anyone else. We had an unusually sunny Many after an unusually long and cold winter.

Rita, you will have as many blooms as I before you know it. That's to say, I don't have but a handful of blooms out of around 750.. I do like your bi-tone. I'm not big on them ( bi-tones) but the contrast in your is really neat!! Thanks for posting your firsts...Ellie

Another bloom on SARATOGA SPRINGTIME yesterday. I din't even bother to take a picture of it as it was down on the ground on the worlds shortest scape, just like the other shot.

I also had a bloom on COUNT IT ALL JOY which is one of the 2009 intros of Karol Emmerich. Its one of these sort of counts scapes as the scape was there but much smaller of course when it arrived.

That one I did take a picture of but my pictures from yesterday are not downloaded yet.
